Anybody here own a Nokia 6220 classic?

Just wondering if anyone here has got a 6220 classic that they run Sat Nav software off a micro SD card? I'm getting one for someone and they want SatNav that does not require a subscription like the bundled Nokia maps that will run from a micro sd card containing the maps so will not need to ring out to function.

I'm talking something like TomTom, Garmin XT, Co-Pilot and so on for the software.

If its got a built in GPS unit then the middleware app should work. I did this with my Nokia N95-8GB, I installed TomTom Navigator along with the middleware app so that I dont need an external GPS unit as it communicates with the internal GPS unit and passes the GPS co-ordinates to the TomTom app. Downside is that the signal takes a few minutes to acquire initially, but for an all-in-one phone GPS solution it makes the phone outstanding even more. I'm also pretty sure that the same middleware works on the 6220 but I can guarantee it.

Yep thought there was a way and its a symbian phone so it should work.

Google searches bring up conflicting reports on whether the 6220 and Garmin mobile XT are compatible as some say an update supports it while others claim not.

I'd heard the TomTom issues but didn't know a workaround may exist so i'll look into that as well.

Nah tomtom one exists its been out for a few months they found a way around.

Or alternatively buy an external gps bluetooth device and use it that way.

ungreat have you bought the 6220?

i got one as an upgrade which is still in the box unused, i can sort you out with an external GPS unit if you want as well. It is locked on Orange, but i have a turbo sim with it, i will be looking at £150 for it.

Thanks for the offer but it's an Xmas gift so i'd rather get it form a shop so any fault issues can be resolved easily.

I've heard that recent downloadable updates allows the Garmin mobile XT software to work with the 6220.

I've picked up a copy for £17 through some one on here's deal spotting so if it doesn't work at least I didn't waste £60.

I have TomTom 6 running on 6220 Classic. It's working fine with both internal or external GPS. Internal GPS time-to-first-fix is pretty poor to be honest without the assist. With assisted GPS, it's fast but ~700kb download which you might want to avoid if you are on a pay-as-you-go tariff.

Did you need to do anything special to get it working pitshanger?

Ended up with a Nokia 6210 but had to jump through hoops to get it to work.

For anyone with the same issue on any of these nokia phones and Garmin XT.

1. Stick the Garmin card in the PC and download the new versions of Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60, Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap and Garmin Mobile XT Support Files from here.

2. Run the support file then the basemap and finally the xt for symbian files and point them towards your Garmin SD. After it's finished stick it back in your phone.

3. In the 6210 go Menu > office > file manager > garmin and run the .sis file.

4. Go through the installation instructions and you should find it somewhere in the Apps folder possibly under 'my apps'.

Don't know if this is the same on the 6220 but I expect it is.
