best get some new cable, sounds like you have a bit leftover from internal wiring (2 way switch wire)
most cable is 3 core, live, neutral and earth

I have 2 switches at the front door- 1 for outside lighting and 1 for stairs (which can be turned off at top of stairs as well) It is a new bulld house and when i took the cover off for the outside light to be installed there was a black, brown, grey and bare wire.
Maybe I need to get an electrician in !!!!!
And get a category P electrician's cert while you're at it. Don't you need one now for anything but changing a plug?
get a sparky to do it before you kill yourself or blow the main board

I would, unless you have a multimeter and know how to use one, i wouldnt mess with it, as you dont know what the wires are in this case

every other chuffer on my street has put a light up ha!!! thanks for your help everyone
these wires are probably for a light fitting with a sensor. you have 1 neutral (black), 1 earth (green and yellow), 1 switched live and 1 permanent live (this is only used if you use a sensor light). you need to find out what colour to use as you 3rd wire(trial and error,probably brown) then tape up the spare wire with insulation tape.
Just lick the wire one by one and use the one that tingles

Black,brown and grey are 3phase(415v) colours which you wont have in your house ,
You sure there isnt a blue core there?:?

yeah i know your right, but why else could there possibly be a fourth wire. one will be the switched live and one will be a permanent live, unless they used 3 core and earth for the hell of it!. anyway looks like the OP has left his thread so , i think i will too!
