Anybody use Halifax Credit Cards - Security Checks for Online Transactions

Long story short ....

I am thinking of leaving Nationwide for two reasons now

1. They are removing teh no overseas transaction charges and

2. There online credit card security checks are a joke.

For example yesterday i bought a phone from CPW online and CPW have this crazy security check policy where they charge your card 1p to verify the card.

Now Nationwide pick up on this and block the card which is fair enough but they do not contact the customer and in fact wait until you use the card and it is block and then you call them - saves them money I guess.

Anyway used my Santander asda card to buy said phone and they Santander called me within minutes to validate teh transaction which I thought was great service.

But I am thinking of moving all my banking to Halifax for their reward account and using teh new Halifax Clarity Credit Card as well

so the question is what experience do folks here have with Halifax credit cards in this way - online security checking. I want a company taht has a active policy like Santander not a passive policy like Nationwide

any comments HUKDers

i have a halifax credit card and it comes up with a box where you have to put a password before the transaction will be complete, the same as when i use my alliance and leicester bank card.

When a lot of people on here got the dell laptop deal last year.
The main prob was cpw charged £0.1p and all card companys stopped the transactions.
So its common a prob

I have had this happen with my Nationwide CC, I was told it was because CPW have so many attempted fraudulent transactions, it has only ever happened when using CPW.

I too am going to be withdrawing my NW Savings and closing my Flexaccount with them once they withdraw their free overseas in Europe cash withdrawals on November the 1st.:(

Yes it is a common problem but its also a fact of teh way teh CC companies deal with it.

nationwide just block your card and say nothing and wait for the customer to react which is a real pain if you have just bought £50 or so of petrol and your card is rejected !!!

I have also had the problem when I tried to book some flight with Lufthansa - I had mis-read the CCV number of the sig strip (another pet hate of mine is when this 3 digit number wears) and they just blocked my card. I used another card - my Santander Asda card without problem then used my nationwide card some days later for shopping at Tesco and was told it was blocked

called Nationwide and they told me they thought there had been a fraudulant transaction on the internet for flights and they had placed a block on my card.

when I asked why they had not contacted me they just said they would have eventaully got round to it - great service - not!

that's fine as lomg as they are proactive and do not just block the card without saying anything.

Santander say they will try mobile phone first then landline then email then a letter ....

Halifax use verified by Visa if you opt in you also get a Visa Debit card so you can use a facility call chargeback.(unlike credit cards where normally you have a minimum spend of £100 to be protected) chargeback can be used for any amount* based on the info I read about. it

Halifax also use a system whereby a debit or credit card flagged as having suspicious activity eg where there is a small charge to credit/debit card and they will phone you to verify it was you making transaction . A right pain in the rrrrr's if you miss the phone call and you ordered goods for next day delivery.

Sounds fine but at least they try to call you to verify the transaction

Nationwide do nothing but block the card which IMHO is a bigger PITA :)

im am starting to really dislike nationwide same reasons as you.

Halifax are so bad, if you miss a payment they bombard you with silent calls ruin your credit rating by placing a marker before you can pay-up,
With the current account they didn't pay all my direct debits one month this made my credit really bomb worse they paid all my charges but wouldn't get involved at branch manager level to help even after admitting fault

Interesting...

I have an appointment with the Halifax tomorrow and this will be one of my questions - how effectively do they manage the switch and what happens when it goes wrong. Wonder if it is managed by a human or a computer? and yes I can guess the answer!

Halifax say they are getting many enquiries from NW customers and have already offered me £50 to swich !

we will see - I will not jump from the frying pan to the fire :)

halifax are without doubt one of the worst banks I have ever encountered (nearly as bad as santander).

maybe I will just stick with lloyds TSB as my main bank and apply for a Halifax Clarity Credit Card.

I really want to move away from Nationwide now because they have erroded all the benefits that drew me to them in the first place so really want to vote with my feet.

However all of teh mainstream banks offer nothing of value anymore !!!
