In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.

So you did go online with CFW at some point then or at any point after first modifying the console.

I have CFW, but have never used PSN. I've not had one of those scare-tactics emails but plenty of other people have.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment released the following statement:

Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.
To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.
What this means to you
Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.
Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.
By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.
Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

It is mandatory to have an e-mail account to sign up for PSN.

Haven't been online with either of my PS3s since I first did Jailbreak hack. Never planned on going online either so no big shakes to lose it.

I bet others wished they did the same thing. No e-mail = No ban.:|

Could be a lot to do with the idiots going online and playing Killzone 3 before it is even released,
god knows why they don't just wait as that game is obviously being rushed out anyway (poor single player and bugged multiplayer) because big hitting games Homefront and Crysis 2 are to be released a couple of weeks after this.

PS3 Online gaming has always been hit and miss, but in the past 3 months its become a nightmare, The hacking is outrageous, never thought I would say it but I am starting to lean towards M$'s stance on online gaming.

For what? not every person with CFW or a jailbreak intends to hack online games so its just an excuse to chuck people off.

I'm all for piracy/hacking/homebrew but also agree with the policy of banning those who do it too. Cake and eat it?

Yes people use it for piracy but others dont, you can use a dvd burner for piracy so do you disable pc's for that reason?

I use mine for emulation of PS1(when it finally gets done) so I can play some old school games on a crt tv for nostalgia purposes and to open up the possibility of better movie support like MKV's just so I can turn on my console instead of using a pc, same for blu rays as most of mine are imported I was hoping for a region free hack.

Finally I planned backing up each game to the hd to play them without going through wardrobes for each game.

If you read Sony's T&C then you will find that modifying the console is against their terms and leaves them well within their rights.

Also playing ROMS of PS1 games is piracy so where's the argument?? lol

As for MKV........mine plays them no problem with no mods.

Indeed, and I'd be surprised if all the MKVs were licensed too...

Uh one thing, ps1 games arent roms they are isos(if you are ripping them) but I was intending playing my ORIGINALS since the majority of PS1 games I own are imported US RPGS that were either never released in UK or are rare(suikoden 2 comes to mind)

It may be against Sony's terms to modify a console but its not against the law and the reports online is that Sony is not just banning consoles but PSNID's meaning you cannot redownload games you purchased from the store etc which isnt harsh, more too extreme.

Unless MKV support is new with the lastest patch then PS3's dont play them its well documented online.

It may not be against the law but is against the terms you signed up to, so then to cry foul is extreme in itself.

Hopefully the ban hammer will fall soon and be done well in time for homefront which looks a cracking game

The reason I cry foul is the treatment of anyone with CFW/jailbreak as a criminal/pirate when its for innocent usage in my case so I am not 100% bothered about losing online more the accusations.

Sure, but who said anything about downloading games(which are isos as already stated not roms) when I said I was playing legit games which are imports.

That cant be piracy if I am using real discs can it?
