Hiya,

Today my doctor prescribed me Citalopram, its a form of medication for people sufferring from depression.

Has anyone taken this medication before? if so, has it been helpful and did you suffer any side effects?

All advice welcome :)

my mum had it....in fact I think she may be still on it....as far as I know she didnt have any side effects....and (I could be wrong but...) I think she stopped teking them for a few months and felt the same....not sure if shes on them or not at the mo and not a very good convo I guess ("oh hows the depression tabs goin? Ya know...just wanna tell someone on the net bout you" lol). hopefully there will be someone who can advise you better :) but remember...all people are diff so perhaps their experiences will be nothing like your own :)

Thanks, I've read on the net that some people may suffer from nausea, dizzyness and shakeyness. I hope I don't get any of that :?

I don't really like a lot of the anti depression tablets I've heard of people I know kind of going on a downer once they had stopped taking them which in effect. Left them in a worse state than before!

Yeh the doctor did say you need to take them for about 6 months or so or it can have a negative come down.

any medication for depression can have side effects-nausea/dizziness,unable to sleep/too sleepy-usually you should give it a go for 2 weeks and then go back to your doc to discuss your progress-if you have any negative side effects they will try a different medication.

That is exactly what she said, I will see how I get on. I just don't fancy feeling worse than I already do

Someone I know was on them a while ago and he had no side affects. His doctor told him that he wouldn't start to notice any difference for about 6 weeks though, but he took them for almost a year and felt absolutely no different at all, so his doctor prescribed him something different and although that seemed to have a positive effect on his moods, they made him incredibly sleepy and he couldn't do his job properly because he was almost falling asleep on his desk and his head was really foggy, so he just stopped taking them. Needless to say, he's still not a great person to be around :-D

I know its hard, you try to do whats best to make yourself better, alot of the time its only ever temporary. I know I should take the tablets but I don't want to become relaint on them :-(

these anti-depressants arnt addictive
addiction and withdrawal are different things all together. Its not addictive just that your body gets used to the medication being there an doesnt like it when its not there, so when you are ready to come off them the doctor will talk you through it.

had them before and made me very sleepy and hardly any energy

I think you should try them with an open mind for two weeks as said in a previous post. Then make an appointment with your doctor to assess how you are feeling. I have heard that they do make some people feel nauseous in some cases but this only in the early stages of taking them.
If you are having severe side effects which are causing additional problem then your doctor can prescribe another type of anti-depressant.
Anyway, good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon

I had to take them when my son was very young because I was being pushed to my limit by him, even as a baby, and he didn't seem to sleep at nights and I had a 1.5 year old to look after too and it all got on top of me, so my gp put me on anti depressants, but after about 6 months, I'd already kicked their father out which helped a great deal as I no longer had his moods and verbal abuse to deal with, and I'd got used to living off very little sleep so I decided to wean myself off them and I've felt absolutely fine since and never needed them again. I think as long as you start feeling positive inside and make whatever changes you need to make sure things are better for you , then you shouldn't become reliant. I'm not saying 6 months is what it will take for you, as each person is different, but making changes around you should help you feel better too

Dont worry, im on 40mg of these, infact today my mental health nurse suggested i may need a boost in medication yet again!

as said before, you wouldnt have been prescribed them if the dr didnt think you needed them. Take them regualrly for 2 weeks and see how you go...if you feel any serious side effects ring your GP and see if you can be seen. There are many different A-D's out there and it may be a case of finding one to suit you. Dont feel ashamed of taking them either, they are a medicine to help an illness, thats all. Good luck and if you need to chat then just PM me

General rule of the thumb is that you take them until you feel better, then take them for a further 6mths AFTER you feel better to make sure you dont lapse back.

As i say i take them no side effects or anything, this weekend i missed a dose as i went away and forgot to take them with me ended up feeling bit rubbish for a day but feeling lot better now they are back in my system.

Arent diazepam a tranquiliser rather than a anti-depressant

Citalopram is an anti-depressant which can havin varying side-effects depending on the individual ...when i took these they gave me sores on my scalp..there is also ecitalopram which is aso an anti depressant

Diazepam are effectively the same as Valium with a different name. :)
