Am apparently off to San Francisco next week with ds and wondered if anyone has been and can advise on places to go, places NOT to go, trips to take, where to eat etc, and any other tips - we'll be there for 3 days so all suggestions welcome :-) Ds is 21 btw !

I was really surprised about the HUGE ammount of homeless people and people with mental problems left to wander the streets of SF when I was there..

Is it somewhere that's ok to walk about - say in the evening etc - as ds is 21 I know he's going to want to go out at night and not sit in the hotel lol - having never been to US I've no clue !

Oh vraptor ... lucky you. We have been to SF, in fact twice - once on the way to N California and once on the way back! We missed out both times on SF itself due to time constraints and every room being booked when we tried to make a reservation. We were miffed.

We saw the up and down roads of movie fame as we went through on the west side.
We drove through and over the Golden Gate Bridge - you can stop and take pics on the far (N) side, of the Bay etc.

Hoping that you have a lot more opportunity than we did and looking forwards to the pics. Have a fabulous time.

I think you should try for China Town and some sort of earthquake disaster thingy, but that is just hearsay

Check out the Pelicans anywhere on the coast - I loved them.

Make sure you eat at least 1 night in the Cheesecake Factory. Great food and massive portions. Try and leave room for at least 1 bit of cheesecake ;)

Yes, but obvioulsy no dark alleyways and don't look like a tourist with expensive gadgets at night, just common sense... On the whole SF is a pretty safe and liberal city, any time of the day or night.

Re violence in the US - I wouldn't have wanted to have the car break down in the neighbourhoods of Cincinnati and so on but generally I have felt very safe everywhere in the US - except on Universal Drive in Orlando !!

Thanks Chesso will certainly try for lots of pics :D ! Not sure where we are staying yet (he won the trip lol) but hoping it's pretty central. Not sure about how we'll get about either - I guess public transport is pretty good over there ? Would love to hire a car & drive round but not sure about timings etc yet either.

Am so excited lol :D

Yummy thanx will do :D !

Just don't drive in the tram lanes :P
#19
Don't bother hiring a car. Public transport is excellent and will get you to wherever you need to go. Just try and plan ahead on a daily basis to get the most of your 3 days. I was there for 5 and never even scratched the surface :(

Alcatraz is a must. Try and book an evening tour as it adds to the atmosphere.

SF is full of hills and homeless people. Didn't much enjoy my stay there.
Some nice spots by the piers though...

Only spent a day there as i was on my way to a place called Chico. Anyway i went to look at Lombard Street (cars zig zag down), Pier 39, Alcatraz and then had a go on the tram lol. Oh and i saw a fire engine with a dalmation riding on it (i thought that only happened in cartoons)

When I went we used the hop on-off tourist bus and found it really good. We had 2 day pass so we got off at different places on either day. You could stay on for a "full circle" and then decide where to get off 2nd time round?
We stayed near union square and used the cable cars/trams really easy. We went to Alcatraz it was an
amazing place and a great tour that you take at your own pace, you get headphones to guide you along.
Many places to eat on a night but surprisingly few "pub only" near where we were staying
TAKE WARM CLOTHING!!!

Some of the hotels have roof-top cocktail bars which is great at night looking over the city and lights. Worth one or two not too expensive cocktails.

Alcatraz, Bicycle Tour across Golden Gate Bridge, great tours that you can do in a day. I'd also recommend the Redwood Forests that are North and South of San Fran - they are absolutely amazing. Half Moon Bay is where I first learned to surf, which is a little way down the coast from San Fran. Beautiful place to sit and have a drink on the beach if you're not the surfing type anyway.

IF you have a hire car and a few days spare on your trip, it's worth heading a bit further northeast and visiting Lake Tahoe. The sites there are completely unforgettable and I can't wait to go back there again in the future.

If you go to San Fransisco - Be sure to wear a flower in your hair. 8) I was there when they where singing and swinging it X)

and lots of keys on keyrings attached to your belt loops, be careful which side you attach them (giver or taker) oO

What does DS stand for?

I have to say I hated san fransisco, I hear it is a great city, but when I went there we had spent a couple of days in Yosemite before we got to SF. The alcatraz tours need to be booked before you go, as they do get really busy. And China Town was pretty cool, as I believe it is one of the largest.

Also the origional levi's store is there, you can get new jeans shrunk to fit in there.
#34
Thank you all there's some great ideas there and I'm really looking forward to it :D just hope ds will let me drag him around all these places lol - if he sees the Apple shop I may just leave him there and pick him up at the end of the 3 days !

Retiredcynic - ds is darling son X) (well he is sometimes hehe ... other times I couldnt say what he is !!)

Does anyone know anything about the ESTA forms ? I know we need to do them, but cant fill them in till Mon night as have to spend all day Mon at the passport office as his has expired :( Anyone know how long they actually take etc ? Thanks.

Yes, I'm sorry but can't remember where it was or what it was called - inside a lot of the singers were dressed in gorgeous purple gowns and the singing was so amazing!! There were quite a few people in there who looked like they were tourists just like me. I stayed in a back packers and it wasn't that far from there but can't remember where that was either!!!! I even videoed a tiny bit I seem to remember, don't know what happened to that!!.....lots of praising the lord - all very interesting to see, you won't regret it. You should be able to ask the staff at the hotel where you stay theres bound to be one nearby thats how I found the one I went to..................

Go to the Food Court in the ground floor of the Westfield Centre. Some amazing places to eat there - especially recommend Buckhorn Grill.

Also, if interested in that kinda thing, the planetarium at the California Academy Of Sciences is amazing.

DD went 2 years ago and said it was the most depressing place she ever visited in her life, she was supposed to be there for 5 days and left after 2.
