Well has anyone???

Maybe goin there for a couple of days next month wi a mate, visit the sights during the day and go sample some of the local beverages at night. Just looking for peoples opions on it, especially nightlife.

Oh and before anyone asks, the reason we chose Brussels was because it was the cheapest place to get flights to. Simple as that!!!

fantastic city - suprisingly compact overall. There is a very long alleyway with 20-30 restaurants all fighting for your custom - very cheap good quality food. Generally, a slow long meal with a few bottles of wine is the way to go. Also there are some very cheap good quality belgian chocolate shop near the pissing boy statue...go there - don't buy near the major squares. Bus tour is very good too.

Have a great time...we did!!!

I have visited many European cities on business over the years and I have to say Brussels was the most boring. It is the home of the EU so full of civil servants and the whole city has a "civil service" feel about it.

To be honest the "sights" are not that great, compared with say Paris.

Grand Place is a large square surrounded by some amazing old buildings

http://rosenblumtv.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/bru-brussels-grand-place-belgium.jpg

There are quite a few "lanes" off the square with many restaurants, all looking for your business so they try to outdo each other with their displays of food outside (mainly fish). Here is a picture of the Rue des Bouchers:

There are a few bars, and a very small "red light" district.

There is a small statue of a boy "pi55ing" which has to be the most boring "sight" in any European city.

And thats it.

Next time go to Paris, or Amsterdam, or Barcelona, or Prague, or.........

Bill Bryson, the famous travel author, says about the city

"Brussels is a seriously ugly place, full of wet litter, boulevards like freeways and muddy building sites. It is a city of grey offices and faceless office workers, the briefcase capital of Europe. It has fewer parks than any city I can think of, and almost no other features to commend it- no castle on a hill, no mountainous cathedral, no street of singularly elegant shops, no backdrop of snowy peaks, no fairy-lighted seafront"

How ever the guy here (where I got the quote) disagress so only fair to give you the alternative view.

Been a couple of times and thought it's a great city myself. Some great places for food and drink around the Grand Place. As already mentioned, there is an area where people stand outside their restaurants and fight for your custom, you can get a free drink with your meal out of them. Also, the selection of Ales is great and some of them come in wacky glasses, they taste 100X nicer then the imported stuff we get here, I love Leffe Brun. You can get passes for the underground too which allow you jump on and off as you please, it's a great way of getting round and visiting the sights.

Nearly got kidnapped!

It was pretty lame.

I've been lots of times and really like it, the old town round the Grand Place is beautiful and it's one of the best places to eat, especially seafood. Don't know about any nightclubs, tended to spend the evenings having a leisurely meal with drinks!

Thanks to everyone so far for there comments, keep them coming!!!!

Seems ro be very mixed views on the city from people on here, but I will only be going for 4 days, so if it isn't that great then I'll know not go back anytime soon.

Done quite a few other european cities, Prague, Budapest, Riga, Gdansk and Amsterdam in the last 2 or 3 years and I am always wanting to go to new places, so I thought I'd give Brussels a try (and its the cheapest flights I can get).

Slept rough in Brussels, after a lengthy conversation with some guy he offered me a place to stay politely declined, watched some guys coming up the main drag and hid, then watched as they beat up another guy sleeping rough :( First thing in the morning I was hungry so walked into a building, turned out to be the post office. Went straight up into the sorting office wasn't stopped once.

They speak French in Brussels by the way not dutch/beligum

Well thanks for that, I intend to be staying in a hotel so wont have to worry about getting beat up whilst I am asleep, unless someone breaks into my hotel room, which would be very unlucky. I dont really intend to visit the post office either, did you find anything nice in the sorting office and was there actually any point to posting that story???

There are two good things about Brussels.

1. Jupiler - The Real Stella
2. The architecture

I lived there for 2 years and have never been to such a country where the two language speaking natives don't really get along.

However, I hope you enjoy your trip.
