I am thinking of going in march-may 2011. What is it like? Do they speak greek or turkish?

I want to stay somewhere with lots of shops, culture, history and obviously a nice beach but may need to rent a car. Im 20 in 2011 so am i allowed to rent a car?

Also not interested in Ayia Napa.

Cheers!

So does most of Europe, and half the world as well!

Couldn't agree more...although I have been to Turkey and they are a lovely bunch as well really...but I've got Greek relations.

Been going for many years (parents used to live there). It's ok but the euro (in the Greek south part, they use the Lira in the Turkish area) has really whacked prices up which was why I went to Turkey last year. The main holiday resorts are in the South - Paphos may be more what you're looking for by the sounds of it (short airport transfer too)

Car hire is pretty lax but it may be over 21, I'm sure you can check with Avis online

stick with the west side of the Island (paphos / coral bay / latchi)

doubt a 20 year old would get car hire tbh

and note it is more expensive than the UK for food / drinks and especially clothing!

Best part is the Turkish part of Cyprus. Very nice people, great scenary if you decide to go up the mountains and not filled with drunken brits, you should find a nice peaceful beach. Cheaper too.

We've been a couple of times, basically for hubby to do some diving but we chose nice places as I don't dive.
We have stayed in Larnaca on the S coast and done day trips using the sort of taxi/public transport. That was fine.
We have also been to Paphos, which we liked a lot. It has a world heritage site with wondeul mosaics and if you stay at the west of the town you can walk there, plus a more greek cypriot sort of area rather than sun/sea/sand tourist one.

There are loads of opticians' shops on Cyprus BTW!

Unfortunately you have to be 25 to rent a car in Cyprus. I have been 3 times to Larnaca, Protaras and Paphos. It is my favourite place in this world. It depends on what you are looking for but my favourite was Paphos. Weather, food and people are all amazing. Enjoy the island but it looks as if you will have to rely on buses or taxis.

This wasn't the case when I went a few years ago. I was 21 and rented a jeep, driving through the mountains in it was great fun!

Most state

Minimum age of drivers is 25 years. However for those that are under age but over 21, a three-year-old driving license is required.
