Anyone been to New York

Morning all, hope everyone had a good weekend!

I'm taking the missus to New York on Thursday for 5 days. Am really looking forward to it. Has anyone been? If so, any good shops/trips that come recommended (besides Macys, Bloomingdales etc). I want to take in a Basketball match (think NY Knicks are playing sunday) amongst others.

Let me know :-)

FAO Scwartz and just round the corner the impressive glass Apple cube is great.

Century 21 down in the financial area is great for bargains (like a cheap TK Max)

Cold this time of year and I mean cold

Woodberry common is a Outlet village with loads of shops. You can book a coach seat from Grand Central station and they give you a voucher booklet with money off from all the shops. It takes about 1 1/2hrs to get there but coaches are regular.

Sex and the city bus tour-if she's into it that is-takes you to carrie's house and lots of other places where filming took place!!
Century 21 brill for designer stuff-much of it in higher league than tk maxx for example a bought D and G shoes for about £40-its the more expensive catwalk designer stuff!!

Have a good look through Tripadvisor, loads of great tips there.
If you are more specific in what you like or want to see im sure i will be able to give you some decent advice. The NY Knicks are hard to get tickets for sometimes so check Ticketmaster.com soon and choose to collect at the willcall desk.

Some quick tips:

Helicopter ride can be really good,
Learn to use the subway, its very quick and cheap!
Tiffanys 3rd floor is the silver floor which has necklaces and bangles for about $150, ignore the other floors unless your very rich!
Go to the Rockerfella centre and go to the 'Top of the Rock', hardly ever a line to wait in and about $20 each to go to the amazing views at the top.
If you do the Empire state building leave at least 3 hours to get up and back down, anything less is a bonus!
UGG shop is on Mercer street, phone ahead if your partner is looking for anything to see if its in stock (prob $140 a pair - bargin!)
Wrap up warm, honestly, hat and scarf weather prob!

you will have a great time!

i would think about going on a bus tour its good to get your bearings and the subway is good but very confusing but it is safe and cheap definaly the Statten Island ferry, Rockefella centre at night and we went to a broadway show which i booked here in the uk, we have excellent seats at about 50% of the price but i think they upgrade you to the best ones they have available
they are http://www.viator.com/New-York-City/d687-ttd:)

We went to NY for easter a few years ago, the thing i most remember was a walking food tour we did, they take you around greenwich village and take you to some awsome little eateries to have samples etc after the tour we then went to some of the restaraunts about 3 of our 5 nights.

http://www.foodsofny.com/greenwichvillage.php

If your planning on doing the statue of liberty you really need to devote a lot of time, the security is worse than most airports.. then when you do get over there there really isnt much to see

anyone been to new york at new year...?? thinking of going this year

Yip, went about 6 years ago, really cold, had to stand outside freezing from 5pm until midnight, no toilets, no re-entery back to Time Square area if you leave for a toilet break, at midnight they played 'Dancing in the streets' by bowie and jagger then 'New york - New york' by Sinatra then it was over!

Real anticlimax! but was a once in a lifetime trip, only because i wouldnt do it again. For $100 i could have got a ticket to the Planet Hollywood new year party with toilets! hehe

:santa:

o that doesnt sound to good.....:? but its gotta be better than new year in Stirling
being trapped in a windowless box would be better than new year in Stirling :giggle:

Thats harsh! Stirling isnt too bad, never been for new year before but i bet its pretty traditional. NYC was an amazing trip and i have been back twice since - both this year! but its just a bit cold at new year, but at least i can say i have been!
#15
thats class! i can imagin wee jimmy at the Rainbow Slides swimming baths! oops! that doesnt sound right!
NYC is great any time of year but very expensive for hotels and flights at new year, how about orlando or vegas!

u must be in your idea of a good new year in Stirling is Wee jimmy krankie at the filthiest swimming baths...this side of a septic tank

pmsl! hehe,

What i meant was a but weird! Spying on wee Jimmy is odd, as is it like male / female / old / young combination?

Its not really grab a granny stuff is it? I dont know......how did i develop an innocent topic like New York City in to preying on an old transvestite kiddi entertainer at the Rainbow Slides?

This is weird.......I blame you now! hehe!

If you have an Am Exp credit card you get discounted tickets to basketball games. We saw the Harlem Globe Trotters, amazing but all of the ad breaks were annoying but glad I got a pointy finger lol

Taxi into Brooklyn for the best pizzerias and walk across at night, views and lights are amazing, just remember to keep in the pedestrian lane or some mad cyclist will get you.

Try the foot long chilli dog in Macy's, yummy but huge.

Hershey store in Times Square, bring a mask as the smell of choc is very heady.

The LIRR is the cheapest way to get to and from the airport, really safe too, only about £7.50 each when we went early last year.

Empire State, most bars when they find out you're English have free entry cards so be nice to your barman.

Natural History Museum is amazing, they have a butterfly house and the prehistoric exhibit is wicked.

I could go on but you only have five days so have fun.

Make sure, if you get a cab from the airport that you don't get into an unsolicited one, go to the stand outside as the fares are agreed before you get in.

No probs, its a little tricky to find as its on Mercer street, number 79, which i think i remember as being in soho, it runs parallell to Broadway, We got on the Subway and got off at Spring Street Station which is only 5 mins away from it.

Remember phone first, im sure you can get the number online and ask what is in stock, it may save you a journey!

Good Luck!

The new york pass is pretty decent... the best thing about it is some places just give you a ticket valid any day, and some you have to use as you enter....

So what i did when i went a few years back was get the pass for 3 days, and collecting the tickets and then going to those when the 3 days was up!

Also, recommend going to see the statute of libery in the morning, otherwise u waste a day queuing!!
#28
I don't usually go for organised trips on my city breaks.
However we bought tickets for the red sightseeing buses that you'll see everywhere.

It was the best money we'd ever spent.

The tour guide was so good and soooo funny. You didn't want to get off!

You can jump on & off all day(or more if longer ticket!) which is very informative & better than a yellow cab.

Enjoy yourselves it's a brilliant place.

So glad people are recommending the New York Pass because I just ordered 2, but you've lost me on the queuing for the statue of liberty (I thought you skip the queue with the pass).

I land at 1pm Christmas Day :santa: then get back in England 2nd January. Not sure what to do for new years, because all this toilet talk is making me nervous!!

Yup, u get to jump the ticket queue, but then you have to queue up to get onto the boat to take u there........ i went and got my ticket during the afternoon and thought i'd go and check out the queue - and kept on walking and walking and walking and when i got to the end of it, i thought it was pointless! My mate who had been before told me to just head back early doors the next day - so when i got there around 9, i literally just walked straight onto the boat!
This might be just because it was peak season, but if there are lots of queues - there's no point u guys queuing up in the cold!

Also, some another recommendations - check out:
- There's a boat cruise that takes you to the SoL at night - i went in summertime, so I saw a nice sunset.... but as ur going xmas time, it will look amazing with the lights!
- The empire state building at night - it's amazing!
- If ur into art/history, there's some cool museums to check out - hopefully the guggeniheim isn't covered!
- grand central station is worth a quick look if ur passing
- game at yankee stadium (although i think they have/are moving to a new stadium across the way?)

Where abouts are u staying?? I'd def recommend grabbing a map and wandering around the greenwich village/soho area - including washington square and popping into little italy!

There's loads to see - so make sure you:
a) get the train pass for the week (you get them on a plastic card which u use - kinda like oyster, but more disposible) - u can't scam using one card and sharing, as once the card goes in the machine, there's a 15min delay before it can be used again!!!
b) get a decent map.... (my recommendation is to get ur nyc pass from planet hollywood - and then go next door where there is a touristy place and you can pick up loads of maps etc!

Let me know if you have any other q's, and i'll see if i can remember any more!

Whats LIRR??:?

it's the train.... http://www.mta.info/lirr/

Depending on what airport ur going to, u can prob just catch the metro to where ur staying (if ur in manhattan)

I'm staying at Quality Times Square Hotel, I think its on 47th Street so really central. Thats why I was unsure if I could use the LIRR thing from Newark Airport.

Thanks for the tips, our passes are valid from 27th to 29th so going to cram in all the touristy things in then. Then hopefully see Blue Man Group at the theatre on 30th, then prepare ourselves for a long new years eve wait in Times Square.

The train pass I'm assuming is something I can sort out when I'm there. Do you get a discount with the pass?

Random thought - do they still have that massive keyboard like in BIG 'Tom Hanks Film'?

Check out this link (google maps) to see how to get to ur hotel..... there's some links to fare details too...

When i went, we took a cab from JFK to harlem... but that was covered on my mate's expenses :p although, catching a cab is pretty cheap.... it cost us $20 to go from one end of harlem to the other..... which was about a tenner when i was tehre.... which is the equivilant of going around the corner in london :-D

I stayed opp Macy's on W34 and got the train right into Maddison Sq Gdns stn, so about 5 mins walk from where you're staying. journey time was less then an hour I think.

They still had the giant keyboard when we went last Feb......:whistling: mostly used by adults lol

I just wasn't sure whether cabs on xmas day would double in price, so willing to consider all options really - although thats probably down to being english - everything gets so expensive around xmas.

Booked a space at a car park for a week at Heathrow for Christmas Morning - £95 - just to park a car!!

New York Passes came this weekend, nearly 4 weeks until I go!!
#38
Theres 9 weeks untill i go to NYC! I am so excited!
I have been looking on trip advisor and have got some great ideas off people on there.
I will be booking my NY Pass at the end of the month.
I'm trying to plan on places to go and when, theres so much to choose from!
