Anyone care to change some one elses BT account options?

In Frustration with BT, spending over an hour trying to report what I think is a problem with their webpage, and getting no-where.
The final insult being the BT "technical chap" giving me a madeup/fake reference number....
Well here goes.
Anyone feel free to confirm this? Is this Normal??

Steps required:
1) Go to google
2) type BT.com
3) select "Your Account" from the results window
4) Click on "Change your plan" or "Change /add calling features"
5) Again Click on "Change your plan" or "Change /add calling Feaures" on the next page
6)Enter your Phone Number - OH did you enter some one elses By Mistake ??? LOL
7) enter postcode, if you nt know it BT will even help you out with that :-)
8) Dont forget their unbreakable security check tick box "I Confirm I am the Account Holder"
9) now you're able to make changes to someone elses account. Order services they certainly did not request.

Does this sound correct to any of you fine readers?
I Dont think so. Surely this in breach of some UK data protection Law?
I Tried contacting Ofcom but they're closed tll 8.30 am 2moro

OK Rant over

surely that cant be right as some one else could change your plan resulting in you being charged more.
#2
Exactly! It SHOULD NOT be possible!
But go ahead and try it for yourself.

Ooooh, another way to irritate the neighbours...
#4
what happens if you actually select one and click continue, are thier no other checks i.e register a account online, don't want to try it as i only know my own tel number and don't want to add something new.

I tried my level best to explain to BT there was a problem, Passed from dpartment to department person to person.
I asked for someone from BT to call me back as I've already spent well over an hour on the phone to them
They agree, and tell me they're going to give me aref number...
so I write it down as he says. Two , Zero, One, Zero, one, one, one, one zero
thats it.
The reference he tried to fob me off with was nothing more than todays Date!
That realy pi**ed me off. they were just not taking me seriously. Eventaully I forced a genuine reference number out of him.
Just shocking. They dont give a damn.
WTF indeed

Have you successfully changed or added a plan with entering ONLY the telephone number and postcode ?

Yes, as a (accidental) test. Intentionally changing someone elses account with out their explicit permission
would be illegal. Although BT seem to facilitate this illegal action

My daughters ex-boyfriend took out a new contract in HER name after they had split up and when she complained she was told there was nothing she could do about it!

we got bt internet & phone only had it 1 month & it was like hell, when ever we rang we would wait a minimum of half hr for the call to be answered but more often that not well into an hr, then when finally through passed to numerous "advisor's" who so called would be able to help us with our problem, yeh right!, in the end we left them because we was miss sold the package! but we got to keep all the equipment, box, phone etc they didn't take it back, so i guess that makes up for all the headaches they put us through (wonder how much i could sell it for) (_;) never ever again will i go back to BT worst customer services ever!

All credit to the OP for finding this and bringing it to the attention of others............BUT.............is it not a tad irresponsible to show the full details on how to change someone's account ??

A lot of people could be affected by this in a very short time and potentially cause innocent people a lot of grief IMO ? (Checked and the OP's instructions DO work.)

Reported for Mod's to reconsider, no offence to the OP.

To be honest if this is the only way BT will do anything about it then I don't see an issue with it. The OP has already advised he has been in contact with BT, what more can you do really..

I just showed dh how it works , if someone is a bit strapped for cash they wouldn't want their account changed to pay a year's rent up front @ £113

I'm not too worried tbh. If anyone made changes to mine then BT would be footing the bill for it plus the more the word is spread then hopefully the quicker they close the loophole.

They'll certainly be facing some fines and costs now i'd think.

BT are a bunch of cowboys, when you take out BT line rental its compulsory you choose one of their call plans.
But if you don't make any calls that BT can charge you for, the small print allows them to add a fine to your monthly line rental fees.
In our case, all our calls are made through a Virgin call package (came free with virgin broadband), but we still have to pay BT line rental fees and also pay the monthly fine for not making any chargeable calls thru BT!!
This has to be anti-competitive, and is effectively punishing people for choosing to make the calls thru another company.

I hope BT gets whats coming to them!!!

Flumpy , I don't get this ? Why aren't you buying your line rental direct form Virgin ?
I maybe missing something ??
[Moderator]#34
Hi Hotto, looks like its me thats missed a trick, i thought line rental was only available thru BT because for rural areas that's the way its always been in the past.
I never realised I could get line rental through Virgin instead.
Thanks for the link, it will be good to get away from BT as im not happy with them at all... and their self renewing 12 month contracts are a sham !!

Well....
Its been FOUR weeks. BT STILL havent plugged this little hole.
