Did you do it yourself or pay someone? How far back did you go? Anything interesting?

My Dad did ours on ancestry.com. Not sure how far back he went though he was contacted through the service found that my Mum had four half brothers and sisters she knew nothing about.

My partners dad went quite far back. He found a half sister that he never knew he had. Opened up a big can of worms. Put me off doing mine! He used ancestry.com too.

I'm pretty sure that I won't find out anything like that. My Mum died this year and I've, obviously, had to go through her stuff. I found out as far back as 1850's but want to go further back :)

I have gone back to 1670 on my Mothers side, took some time but found some real interesting stuff, well worth it. I had a great uncle that was killed in WW1 but was showing as fighting with an Australian regiment which really puzzled me. I was then contacted by someone in Australia explaining that he had been sent to Australia as an 'apprentice' to get out of finishing a term in borstal! Then got offered a chance to join the army to escape that.... very sad

I did mine on Ancestry.com too, but could not get beyond 1720. Uncovered loads of interesting info on my lineage though!

My family on my mother's side came from Europe to Cornwall in about 1700. Being Jews, I think it may have been because of the persecution of Jews at the time. The other side of the family came from Cumbria and were rich landowners, though none of that wealth came down to me :(. It seems that, resulting from a marriage, they moved to London. Some very sad deaths cause by TB and other nasties.

She must've been one of the last women to be hanged? (To Notts 6501)

I bet it made you think a lot...you know about part of YOUR family having to flee from danger.

Yes. I have most of their birth, marriage and death certificates, which seems to make them very real to me. They were survivors to say the least.

That's what's made me want to do a tree..my Mum died this year and when I was going through all the old photos I found birth and death certificates from way back. Think it was my great, great grandfather who fought in the Crimean war. That was as far back as I can go right now.

Contact any members of the family still around and ask for any info they have, even younger members may have been told stories which will help. Get as much as you can before you start the official searches as it can get expensive.

The other half has done hers (work in progress still) and gone back far enough to find she is related to Atilla the Hun (which she so regrets telling me now, as I keep mentioning the family resemblance!)

Her work is a combination of genes reunited, family who have done some and a lot of digging around and hard work.

There was a few false leads in stuff already done so it needed a lot of serious checking out to confirm everything.

FreeBMD is a good place to start out and it is free. Also a lot of libraries have free access to the census records.

Good luck
