A family member of mine had their fortune told the other day and a lot of what the fortune teller said was true, has anyone here ever had their fortune told and how much of it was true?

Fortune tellers work on a hit and miss premis, its like throwing a hand full of darts at a dart board and hoping to hit a bullseye. They just fire out lots of statements, and then when they get something you just home in on the bulls eye ignoring all other misses

I walked into one once and just punched them.

They never saw it coming.

A consultation costs a ............ well a fortune, doesn't it?

Your future is what you make it, nothing to do with fate or chance, but rather the choices you make in life.

Woman came up to me in the street one day saying my name.Really freaked me out as i'd never seen her before :?

She knew all the names of people close to me,my bro, best pal, partner etc.
she told me about all the problem i was havin with my partner at the time and that it would sort itself out and how i worried about my best friend who's gay and all tho it caused him probs he'd get his dream job in the end.Went right into detail and it really spooked me out.
She gave me two charms aswell then left, didnt ask for anything.

when i told my partner he said she must have been following me or something?
My gran said she was probably a gypsy and that they can just sense it?

still not to sure but i still carry the charms and everything she said came true.

Still freaks me out,how do u think she knew so much?

hmmm..

dont really wanna encourage a belief in fortune tellers ..

When I was having my second child, I musta been about 8 months pregnant, trying to waddle, I mean walk up two or three steps into dorothy perkins and a woman took my arm and helped me up the steps. I looked up at her and she was dressed like a gypsy... She tapped my arm and told me I was having a little girl and then went off..

Guess what gender my child is?

She's female, just like the gypsy said...

But then she had a 50/50 chance of being right huh?

yes saw one once and she told me things that i had forgotten about in my past, she got so much right about me it freaked me out
she also said that she saw my grandad and he said i was still his little girl,he always called me that as my mum was a young single mum when i was born and i was brought up by my grandparents for a while and called my grandad "dad"
probably just coincidense...

i asked to be big but tom hanks beat me to it

I think people gain a sense of comfort in believing others can know things about them without being told... and there's nothing wrong with this. Comfort is great, it leads to increased levels of confidence, independence and self esteem.

I also think that people can tell a lot about how you are feeling about what they say by small body movements, the things you say in return, body language. It wouldn't be too difficult to keep most of ones comments fairly general and to follow any cues the interviewee gives you... Also people are more likely to remember a true comment than one that doesn't actually make any sense to them and if you're wanting something to be so.... you can easily hear things that havent necessarily been meant.

Having said that.. maybe it is all real. Who knows.

Not been to see anyone like a fortune teller but along the same lines, this girl at my partners work into Tarot Card Readings and she did a reading for him few days back and she says I'm carrying a girl and said a few other things about other stuff.
I don't really know what to make of it all,I think my baby is probably a boy,I'm more likely convinced it's boy over a girl but who knows,10wks or so till find out!

I firmly believe in fortune tellers but there are a lot of fakes out there too.

I've had my fortune told several times and nearly everything has happened (things that is impossible to know) about my past and present and the rest of the future is yet to happen but a lot of it has already gone through. :)

Saying this, I might get my fortune told over the weekend but I suspect I already know what's in store. :)

They're all fakes. It's just some are better fakes than others.

Two words, Cold Reading! Its the same stunt that these paranormal dudes use, (john Edwards being the biggest and most shameless culprit)!

It should be band, the amount of people that have been taken for thousands of £'s by dodgy fortune tellers its despicable!

Rant over! \m/

lol!

Hi hon, hope you're having a great day x x

Consider the psychological effects of an individuals intrinsic and external motivators...

There are issues around what a human being is able to control and not control here.

If we experience some form of magical psychic understanding and ability this says to people that there is a form of universal control here upon their lives and it can help them come to terms with their feelings.

Absolutely agree. James Randi's work is a good place to start.

There is something I like about cold reading because the techniques are really very interesting, but there's something questionable about using them to exploit the vulnerable.

But then advertising works on some of the same principles so it's hard to get to annoyed about it.

Hey COM - I'm good. Hope you're well too.

How exactly is it ignorant? I've educated myself on cold reading and read about a lot of psychics.

I first got interested in it when I started reading about Harry Houdini - because he was a master 'trickster' he was able to first expose the tricks used by so-called psychics.

It's sad that after all the evidence we have had for years now, and even the fact that BY LAW psychics have to state they are solely entertainment that some still believe that they're really magic.

I know that some are very convincing and they 'tell you things no one could know' but they are all, without exception, bogus.

well unless its if you get a 'good fortune teller' then you won't belive it. My mums was recordered on tape and it was scary how much was true. Id quite like to go see her, was only £20.

Wow, that's cheap. It's strange that insurance companies still exist when for £20 you can be told what your future holds.
