Anyone from Gloucester or Cheltenham?

Will be starting a job for a year in Gloucester soon and looking for some advice on where to live. Gloucester seemed like a bit of a dump, though the docks were nice. How's Cheltenham in comparison? It's only a short drive away and I could cope with the commute if it was a significantly nicer town to live in.

stay in cheltenham, leckhampton type areas, gloucester central is a dump, outskirts like highnam, ross on wye, hempstead village are nice, depends on what you can afford.
Are you renting or buying?

I will be renting. I had a quick look at places in Gloucester and the apartments in the dock conversions didn't look too bad. I think around 500-600 for a one bedroom.

Is the commute a pain in the ass? I think it said it was a 15 minute drive but I'm guessing a lot of people do this in the morning and evening.

Can you get nice one bedroom places in Cheltenham for a similar price?

the docks is about right for around £500 one bedroom, you may be able to get for a little extra 2/3 bedroom house in around quedgeley, abbeydale, abbeymead areas, these are family areas, some are new suburban builds.
The commute from chelt might take 30/45 mins daily depend on traffic. chelt has much better night life, pubs, clubs, eateries, shopping, etc

Girlfriend lives near Gloucester, really is not very good.

I agree with what red_one said.

Is that 30/45 mins each way? If that's just a daily total then that's not bad at all. Are rental prices similar?

Yeah I got that impression when walking through the town centre. Almost rivalled Newport, South Wales in it's levels of dump'ness

yes each way, cheltenham is 8 miles from glos, but all depends where you stay, what time you start and finish work.
rush hour 7-10am, evening 4-6.30pm mad rush.
I just been to glos this morning took me 1 hr there and back between 11 and 12

To be honest, cheltenham is a bit nicer but then still not that impressive, but then coming from a "big city" i guess what i think is good would be higher.

The town centre is shocking and could do with blowing up, the new shopping centre by the docks is nice but lacks shops really.
