Rally in protest of Deputy Ambassador of Israel Manchester University Visit
Reasons to go:
Rally protesting Deputy Israeli Ambassadors Visit to Manchester University Thursday 18th, 2 PM meeting at the stairs at Manchester University Students' Union, Oxford Road
In conjunction with the visit proposed and accepted by the Politics society at Manchester university, we will be holding a rally in opposition to the talk going ahead in the union.
We recognise the israeli deptuy ambassador's freedom of speech but having this talk held in the Students' Union clearly goes against several factors:
1) It undermines Union policy as the current Boycott Divestment Scheme is in place.
2) The fact that the Union is named after an inspirational human rights activist, Steven Biko, is both ironic and appauling. A man who stood up against the South African aparthied just to have a representative of the aparthied state of israel airing views in a union dedicated to his efforts.
3) The fact that this meeting is named 'Hopes and challenges in the Middle East' whilst denying a Palestinian or any other Middle Eastern state representatives their right to share their views makes one question paritality and the agenda the university/Politics society wishes to push.
DROP ALL CHARGES AGAINST THE ELEVEN
On February 8th, US Israeli Ambassador Micheal Oren spoke at the University of Califorina Irvine. During his speech Oren was interrupted by 11 protesters who had every right to speak out. Now they are charged with disrupting the peace and being targeted by hostile university administrators. They have a lawyer on their side but the UCI students might face suspension or expulsion.
