Requirements:
1. 6 man roster Sun-Sat, 3 people dayshift 3 people backshift to rotate each week.
2. Requirement to cover 2 shift times - dayshift (06:00-13:00) and backshift (13:00-20:00).
3. Based on a 5 day 35 hour working week with 2 rest days per week.
4. 4 people to be out mon-fri (2 dayshift 2 backshift), 3 on a sat (2 dayshift, 1 backshift) , 2 on a sunday (1 dayshift, 1 backshift).

EDIT: forgot to add, where possible, people to stay on the same side of the shift for the week (i.e dayshift all week)
Oh, and the 4 out during the week is a minimum, 5 or 6 out on the one day is fine too

Good luck with this Rex, I do staff rota's but not as complex.
I normally cheat by asking them what hours they prefer and that sometimes sorts it out easily.

Have you thought of extending the hours ?
I used to do 3 earlys, three lates and three off - I then changed it to three double shifts with six days off.Its a killer, but if anyone went sick there were plenty of takers for the OT.
#12
Is it your job to be devising these rosters? If it is you might want to sort it out for yourself. After all, you can't be asking on here each time they need to be changed.

You can get rostering software (haven't tried any though) - you could try and find a trial or shareware version....

Can't do it - requirements of the business and all that. :?

Basically been told to get a roster in place for myself and 5 colleagues (area managers) or else we're going to get shafted with something which will have one of us out to midnight each night, and 4 out of the 6 of us out on both Saturdays and Sundays. Have until Monday to come up with something, but everything I look at simply doesn't balance. :x

OH, and we have an overtime ban on lol

Not really my job, and once in place, they won't be getting changed.

Tried a couple of things, VERY complex to use and don't seem to be geared towards what I'm trying to achieve.

Do you work at my place LOL - I reckon there must be some enormous (secret) meeting of company directors rubbing there greedy hands together because of the credit crunch. The [email protected]@rds !

I sympathise with you cause they want more than their pound of flesh now and can use scare/bully boy tactics to get what they want - we had a similar thing after 9/11 even though revenue went through the roof.

i dont know if this helps clarify but you got 25 shifts to fill with enough staff to fill 30 shifts

ie more staff than shifts

Days off don't need to be together, though would be nice!

Yeah, it's pathetic. We had our "no more overtime" meeting a few weeks ago, next day a company memo came out announcing record profits!!! :x

Plenty of bodies, just trying to work something with a good work/life balance that will tumble easily week to week and give a fair spread of shifts to all involved

No you're right, grex you're gonna have to have days probably during the week (busiest days?) when there's more than 2 in the morn and 2 in the evenin', assuming they're all on 35hr contracts.
#21
Can I ask when you say "out" do you mean "working" or "off"???

You're right, that's fine. All 6 of us can be out if need be - 4 during the week is a minimum number.

Sorry, "out" working!!!

What type of work is it, what are your busy days?

transport sector, as with most businesses, monday can be busy, but as long as there's a minimum of 2 out either side of the shift, there's no real problem

i also used to do rota's and i can safelly say this cant be done ! you would have to let someone go ! an easy calculation tells you that , let me explain !

6 staff X 35 hours = 210 hours needed

then going by your requirements !

sunday 2 staff = 14 hours
monday 4 staff =28 hours
tuesday 4 staff =28 hours
wednesday 4 staff = 28 hours
thursday 4 staff = 28 hours
friday 4 staff = 28 hours
sat 3 staff = 21 hours
Total = 175 hours

therefore 210 - 175 = 35 hours to many = 1 staff member goes bye bye

unless you have 5 in mon-fri

Totally get what you're saying mate, don't think it's to reduce body count, more to produce a more "robust" weekday roster.

Alfie73 has helped me out over pm (thanks again) so I'm looking at a workable roster now.

Thanks to all who've helped, repped as many as I can
