Or is there a way to do it without using one? I guess it's not as simple of plugging them both into my pc. Google has loads of guides using the transfer kit, but pretty bare on alternate methods.

anyone?

And what happened to the replies that were in this thread earlier?

There was one post prior to yours and the member that posted it removed it themselves (there's an option to 'delete' when you click 'edit' on one of your thread posts), it wasn't MOD removed, thanks.

If you have a hard drive then you can do it with one of them...simply plug the hard drive into your xbox (you'll need the latest update on your xbox)...then transfer data over to the hard drive from your xbox HDD and then swap the 20gb for the 120gb and transfer back.

I did it recently...took about 10 minutes.

You mean plug in an external drive via usb, and then copy across from the xbox dashboard?

Sounds easy enough, just waiting for the postman to bring my shiny new elite, then will give it a go.

Rep pending it's success ! :)

How did you get on? So long as you plugged the 20gb into the elite, then plugged an external drive via USB then it should of been ok.

I found it when I called MS to order a transfer kit and the guy asked if I had an external HD drive, i said yes, he said you dont need one...told me what to do, i tried it and it worked fine. Not the hardest thing to do and saved me £15! :-D

Yeah, no need for the transfer kit. Surprised its not more widely advertised on the web, would have thought loads of people would have done it this way.
