Anyone got a cat with CRF?

Just a quick question to find out if anyone on here has a cat with chronic renal failure. If so, are they on medication? eating a special kind of food?

Hi there I did have (wee soul died 4 years ago) a beautiful burmese cat who lived till she was 21 and a half years old, but at 17 years old she started to show signs of her kidney function deteriorating (losing weight/blood test results etc) and my vet recommended putting her http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/324100/anyone-got-a-cat-with-crf/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gifon FORTREKOR 5. It was apparently developed for dogs with heart problems but they found it can help cats with poor kidneys as it decreases the rate of deterioration (unfortunately it can't stop it). Anyway it certainly helped her she put on weight and generally had a bit more life about her and she lasted 4 years longer than i expected.
I remember it cost about £15 for a months supply of the pills and I also tried to put her on a reduced salt/specialist cat food for older cats (but she wouldn't always eat it).

So I'm not sure if there may be other more effective drugs available now perhaps you could check on google or ask your vet for advice.

Good luck and hope you get lots of helpful replies!!!

Ah no.. the reason I ask is that I had to have my cat put down yesterday. She was almost 15 and the BUN levels went off the scale. I have a load of pills and food that my other cat doesn't need.. if anyone here posted that their cat was on the same type, then I would offer to send them the bits I have... We did absolutely everything we could to help her, and so now have quite a lot of bits and pieces that we're not sure what to do with...

Take them back to the vets, they are POM (prescription only medication) and you could be doing extreme harm dishing them out to other owners. Sorry about your cat.

Actually they are not all prescription only.. and also.. this is why i didn't mention the name of the meds.. If someone here has been prescribed something for CRF, they will know the name and dosage. If it's the same as what I have, then how is that doing them harm?

I thought I could do someone a kind deed because I know how hard it is to have an elderly cat, and also how expensive helping them is.. Thanks for the bitter sympathy.

Wasn't bitter sympathy, but take it as you will. And like you said some IS prescription only....

sorry to hear about your cat.

you did the best thing - the only thing - as mentioned earlier my cat Purry was 18 and it was dreadful to see him suffering - I had him when my daughter was 3 so she was 21 when he died, she had never really known her life without him

It's hard.. having to convince myself it was right. I've had her since she was a kitten and she was there with me through some of the worst years of my life. Even though you know this day is coming, it never really prepares you for it. I guess this is something only a 'cat person' is going to understand. Thanks for the nice messages. I'm sorry I can't help someone else out

I used to dream of my cat for a long time up until recently and hes been gone 5 years, I used to dream I had not fed him, I got so fed up of the panic dreams in the end I went and bought some cat food - the dreams stopped
