Anyone got any advice re cleaning carpets?

Our carpets really need a good clean, especially where it's really ground in near the front door, and just wondered if anyone had any tips on the best method:

Will something like Vanish Carpet Mouse do the job?
OR
Is it worth hiring a carpet shampoo vacuum?
OR
?????

Rep for good ideas, many thanks.

It pays to carpets cleaned by a good company as they will use chemicals that the general public can't use and of course the carpets will be almost dry when the job is complete

trouble is if you do a small area it makes the rest of the carpet look grubby then, get in some professional carpet cleaners and do it all.

imho steam is the best clean you will get-your local hire shop will have steam cleaners-we bought a polti machine years ago(was about 300 quid then) and its still going strong.

the cleaners at work also use steam mostly now rather than chemicals of any sort-we have 2 dogs and kids in and out all the time with mucky shoes and steam cleaning works wonders!

Think about how much u spend on ur carpets - a lot - so u r better to get in a company - plus let them do all the hard work

They are all very competitive with their prices and all desparate for ur business. Plus they are insured if anything goes wrong. I rented one of those machines and done my parents - and when there carpets dried every one of them had SHRUNK!!!!!

so I wouldnt take any chances!

Hi I would recomend hiring a rug doctor (we got ours from b&q)
we found this better as it dries quicker, if you do it manually it tends to get just as dirty because of the lengh of time it takes to dry , rug doctor carpet shampoo is also very good.
Hope this Helps

Some say it was a magic cleaner, still the house seemed much more spacious. :w00t:

My living room used to get alot of red wine abuse, on a light red carpet thankfully, but steam clean made it look brand new, proper professional carpet cleaner with industrial (20hp+ diesel engine because your 13amp 3000watt power plug is just too puny, hired steam cleaner or not) steam cleaner will do the job, call your local ones get some quotes :)
