I bought a ring from Goldsmiths last weekend but as it was in the sale, I had to have it sent away to be re-sized. Due to the ring being in the sale, I am being made to pay to have it re-sized which is about £45.

The ring was sent away on a "urgent" as I needed it back yesterday, they informed me this shouldn't be a problem. Surprise surprise, the ring didn't come in yesterday and they can't "chase it up" until tomorrow. The ring is a birthday present to me from my grandparents and my birthday is on Tuesday so it needs to be back with me by then.

What I am wondering is, why are they charging me £44 because they are re-sizing the ring to make it smaller, so therefore cutting a bit of out the ring. The ring is platinum and going down five sizes (so I am also a bit worried about how the join will look and if the stone settings will be affected) so that is a fair chunk of platinum that they are going to get to keep and most likely, melt down and use to make another ring.

Do you know if I am within my rights to ask for this bit of platinum back?

Also, has anyone had any problems with ring re-sizing, I think I am just a bit worried as going down five sizes is quite a lot and I am worried about the join and how safe the stones will be. I took it back to Goldsmiths as that is where I bought it so would you think if anything does go wrong that they will take responsibility for it?

It was the only one they had left, and I believe it was a size P. It fitted ok on my index finger but even still would have needed to go down at least a half size. I want to wear it on my "ring finger" on my right hand.

It is going from a P to a K. The woman who served me when I first bought the ring and when I took it in to get it re-sized asked her manager if this would be ok to reduce it by five sizes and he assured her (and me) that it would, I think I am just getting panicky about it as I am really worried something is going to go wrong! I am also not happy about paying out to re-size a ring and they are keeping a chunk of platinum!

if a ring is in the sale then from what i know you usually do have to pay to have it resized, i peronally would not have a ring rezied to this extent

when my OH got my engagement ring i told him the size, they gave him one 4 sizes too small. when I took it back to complain they said if i wanted to return it it would take 6 weeks fro a refund as they would have to send it to a specialist to check it was the same diamond in the setting!! (we had only had it overnight!)

i took it to a independent shop and they re-sized it for under £20 which included putting a piece of gold into the ring!! and the only had it 3 hours, dont think id ever got back to a named store again!!

and think you may find asking for the pice back after the job has been done a little late, you really should have discussed this before going for this option

I was really concerned as well but like I said, they said it would be ok. I keep having bad dreams about the bloody stones falling out or something. The only plus side to this is that they have not heard anything from the goldsmiths (it was sent out) who are re-sizing the ring to say it can't be done.

IF something does go wrong, do you think Goldsmiths would take responsiblity for it? I am going to really stress myself out worrying out this tonight - I am praying it is back tomorrow or I am really ******ed and my grandparents will be gutted if I am not wearing it on my birthday.........................

I always thought that you got the bit back, I only found out the other day when one of my collegues told me how they thought it was disgusting what they were charging me as they kept the bit, I honestly thought they gave you it back as I have paid for it after all!

I'm afraid you went into this purchase with eyes wide open so can't blame the jewellers. They can and ofter do resize jewellery down or up several sizes and for any that I've had done (from inherited jewellery) you are unable to see a join and it does not affect the quality of the ring.

As to asking for the platinum back....perhaps you should have asked the question before it was sent away!!

hun i know easier said than done, but stressing wont make it any better, go into jewellers tomorrow and it prob be back? when it is make sure you check over the ring very carefully, sorry hun cant remember was it one diamond or diamonds?

Apparently it is costing more because it is platinum, I can't see how that works as they are taking a bit out not putting it in. The cheapest quote I got from an independent jewellers was £30 but Goldsmiths said they wouldnt touch it if I took it elsewhere

then that is telling you it is still covered by them should a stone fall out

I know, I am being really stupid about it.

I honestly never thought that I wouldnt get the bit they took out back. I mean, I paid for the ring, I should get the piece back! Never mind, if I don't, I don't. End of.

It is a three stone (in a row) diamond ring.

If it is not back tomorrow then there is going to be some serious trouble between me and the store manager. He said it would be back by Saturday and it wasn't. I will be checking it over, I was told who they send them out to is very good and you can't see the join so I will be checking for that. Also will be checking the stones for movement!

I have never heard of anyone having the bit of gold back, it seems maybe you made a rash decision, but please wait till the ring is back before going in on all cylinders

Don't worry, I won't. What I mean about getting angry is if the ring isnt back tomorrow. The store manager assured me it would be no problem getting the ring back for Saturday but it didn't turn up and they can't "chase it up" until tomorrow. Considering I told them several times I must without fail be back by the 18th, him saying "chase it up" doesn't fill me with hope :x

I will just ask about the piece and point out I think its a bit unfair that they are charging me so much and keeping a bi of valueable platinum too.

Apparently some jewellers do let you have the bit back, but may be that is just jewellers who have an on site repair centre then? Who knows.

I am going to try and relax tonight and not think about it!

Thanks for your help!

i really hope your ring is back tomorrow, and it is all that you want, if it is not, please try and remember to stay calm, you get more by being calm and to the point than you do whilst ranting and raving x

Lol! I am rubbish at ranting and raving so that wouldnt happen. Like you said, its best to stay calm and make the point than yelling at some poor sales assistant!

I'd find out as it wasnt back when you were promised it if for some kind of compensation like if they have a insurance scheme that if there is any faults or damage could be given to you FREE of charge one way of making your money back from the resizing.

Good luck x oh and happy birthday for tuesday!

Well, the ring didnt turn up today.

Got a call from them this morning to say that their courier "let them down". Apparently they sent it out via a courier for next day delivery (it was sent out Tuesday morning for delivery on Wednesday) but for some reason it wasnt delivered until Friday. She said that they (the company repairing it) would get it done today and sent out this evening and for delivery tomorrow (not that I am holding out much hope).

Obviously I am really ******* about this. It is my birthday tomorrow, I really dont have time to go in to town and pick the ring up as I have plans nearly all day! I am really mad at Goldsmiths. If they had told me there was a chance that they couldnt get it back in time I would have taken it somewhere else.

What I am going to do IF it turns up is check the ring over, put it on my finger then demand to speak to the manager and tell them that I want either the cost of resizing wiped or at the very least halfed for all the hassle they have put me through. From start to finish this has been a complete nightmare and no way will I be buying or having anything repaired by them again!

I asked on the phone when the woman from Goldsmiths rang if I could speak to the Manager but apparently he wasnt in today so couldnt speak to him so probably wasnt worth it going in and complaining.

I will see what happens tomorrow, hopefully they will recognise what a cock up they have made and offer something!

It turned up today, at 4.00pm.................... I have not been able to do much all day because I have had to hang around waiting for them to call when it turned up. Had to rush up (as they shut at 5pm) as well.

When I went in to pick it up, the girl couldnt find it, took her ten minutes to find it in the wrong drawer. Then she refused to reduce the cost of the resizing and refused to apoligise as it wasnt their fault. She then went and spoke to the Manager who came over, gave me a dirty look, did something on the till and just said "£34". The girl then said that he had took off £10 and that was all they were willing to do.

Not happy, I will be writing a letter off to their Head Office!

Also make sure that when they resized it, that they havent taken out the hall mark.
This happened to me a while back with a ring that was left to me.
I made sure that I told the jeweller, that the hall mark had not to be touched. Also got a reciept stating the same.
Guess what?.
Hall mark was cut out.:x:x
Ended up taking the jeweller to the small claims court.
Found in my favour, got compensated good style.
Only problem was, when it went back to the assey office it had last years hall mark on it. Not the one from 1948 that it should have had.

Whats the purpose of a hall mark?

It shows that it is gold. Grade of gold, year it was made and where it was assayed at, eg Birmingham, London, Chester etc.
