I dont know what i do wrong but this is the second time i have tried to use the scanner to self serve and i can never get my stuff to scan .Is there a knack of doing this or do i maybe put the item to close to the scanner ?I always need assistance at some point because ive scanned twice means its a waste of time because i would have been quicker standing in the normal queue which is frustrating !lol

well i always look like a shop lifter as i put thing in my bag that i havent scanned i think the knack is to hold the item over the scanner till it beeps rather than swyping it , i hate them bluuudy thing but its pointless going to a till with a few items xx

I find the Tesco one is the best where you add your items to the conveyor belt and have to rush back and forth packing your shopping like a thing possessed!!!

However what I find really good about it is that on a regular basis I scan my item and add it to the belt, but the silly woman inside the machine tells me to 'place the item on the belt' and if I am really lucky I have another one so add that and therefore get 1 free!!!!

lol ! I love and hate those stupid machines. They always accuse me of shoplifting even when i havent - I always get the message " Attention unauthorised item in the bagging area".
My only advice is if you dont want to draw attention to yourself, dont use the self scan tills. Even my daughter who could hack into my emails at age 4 cant work them properly - they have made them user proof.

I find them quite easy. There's a bit of a nack to it but once trained up, as long as you aren't stuck behind someone who can't work it, it can immensely cut time and stress lol.

Hold the item with the barcode pointing at the machine. Sometimes it's good to hold it at a bit on angle so it points downwards slightly. As said above, don't swipe the item, hold it there and move it slowly in a cirsular motion so it tries several items.

My only stressy bit is the little bagging animation it shows which really slows me down scanning the next thing in.

If there's two of you then take it in turns like a team - even quicker. Or, you could have extra shopping fun and both take half of the shopping to different machines and have a race to see who can do it fastest. It's a funny game - one of the few times when the winner is also a loser!! Maybe I just need to get out more.

Yeah, similar tip to what I was going to say but wasn't quite sure if it was true.

They can be very handy to slip those money off coupons through!!

There does seem to be a skill to it, I can't explain it but the posters above seem right. I think that only people who have the skill should be allowed to use them, I find it really quick but the old man in front who can't work it makes the idea pointless.

You would think so, but it has happened on several occasions. Not all times have I had 2 of the same to put another on, but at least 3 times the lady in that machine 'made me do it'!!!!

Also, try not to touch the bottom screen as this also incorporates the scales, till then thinks you have a weighable item and starts a different process. I have to say that these tills are, generally a marvel. So many people that don't want to use them, leaving them empty for the likes of me. Although, I do share my knowledge and have scanned stuff for oldies. Even though the spotty youth at the control centre texting his pregnant girlfriend should have been doing it.

I thought it weighed your bag before scanning and after scanning ? otherwise loads of folk would be stealing items !

how to u get an item free? I thought the machine weighed your basket before scanning and is able to weigh the shopping at the end so the same weight means all items are paid for !

I don't think it weighs your basket prior to you scanning? I don't always use a basket? Their is a weighing facility but it is easily confused. Have only ever managed, entirely unintended I hasten to add, on about 3 occasions to get some bits free...... Well what are you to do when it tells you to add the item to the belt?? Put it on...... only it was confused, and so was I but on checking my receipt at the end it had FORCED ME TO STEAL!!!!

What does one do with the money off coupons after you have scanned them, I pressume the store needs them to claim back the discount

In local tesco express there is no conveyor belt, you just scan item in then place on the bag area (don't have to place in bag), just aim the barcode at either the bottom or side scanner doesn't need to be at a weird angle. A Policeman on the machine next to me was moaning he didn't know you needed a degree to do shopping, I was in and out with more items before he had even paid.

In my local ASDA you have to wait for the people to come over if you have a voucher. Very frustrating.

Getting rid of loose change is fun...

And when the change comes out if you put a note in. Oooooohhh... it feels like I've WON!! :) Like winning on a one-armed-bandit. A bit like an ATM machine. I win loads of money from ATM machines too, although I usually have to walk in the bank and pay it all back in to avoid overdraft fees!! :giggle:

asdas self service machines are terrible. Almost every other item that i scan, it seems to have a problem with the weight when i place it in the bag. Then the women manning the self service machines has to come to my assistance, and i feel like a real douche!!.My advice, go to tesco, their machines are way less sensitive!!.
