Daughter has just told me the touchpad not working on her laptop. I'm pretty useless at this sort of thing. Have went on to control panel (eventually) using the keys but nothing seems untoward and it states it is enabled etc. Not sure if she has maybe locked it accidentally - if so anyone know how to unlock it? Its not an expensive one just an Acer one but dear enough for her to wreck! Any advice greatly appreciated.

Do you mean the touchpad?

Might be faulty. Had the same issue on a HP laptop recently, they took it back and replaced it.
Prior to that I tried everything - reinstalling drivers, operating system etc.

Could be - hoping it wasn't and its something obvious like locked accidentally or similar. Its only 4 months old and still under guarantee so can take it back. Just didn't want the humiliation of them saying it was something silly like "locked" - have visions of the sketch in Chewin the Fat with the two guys in the electrical shop.......:)

Turn it off and then when restarting, hold down the "M" key on the keyboard. This resets the mouse settings. If this does not work, restart again and press the Space Bar 8 times BEFORE Windows starts up, this causes a full "data flush" of all the USB ports

sounds silly but is there a little button on or near the touchpad thats been knocked on ?

Download the latest drivers for the touchpad? Or see if there is a problem with it in device manager perhaps.

No there's no wee button anywhere beside it. And nothing sounds silly to me - seriously! Thanks anyway

Nah - already tried all that - funnily enough it didn't help. how about an ode to a defunct touchpad - that may work?

Thanks - will give that a go.

Is there a picture of a mouse on one of the function keys, this enables and disables the touchpad

okay, above the touchpad does it have an orange or blue light?

Not that I can see.

No lights or any indicators above or beside the touch pad - just the usual space bar and other keys directly above.

start it on battery

close it down

remove battery

start it on external power

shut it down

replace battery and restart

that may do it - i had similar issue with a laptop and that sorted it on the few times it happened

She may have accidentally disabled the touchpad.

At this moment in time my mind has gone blank on where to go to re-enable it. I have a feeling it is in the control panel, but I also remember another customer having to press a key combination to re-enable it. It could also be disabled in the BIOS (long shot).

Apologies for the failure. Google how to disable/enable the touchpad of the laptop :)

*EDIT* I did a quick Google and the first result recommended pressing Fn + F7. Give it a shot :)

Yup. I had a feeling it was going to be that combo, but wanted to check before saying anything for definite - My head is focussed on my assignment atm, surfaced for a moment but I drew a blank lol.

Thanks to you both - will give it a go though did try it earlier with all the F button combinations as had googled earlier (pretty useless though).

Will also try your links dragonchris.

Alfonze - still can't see any picture of a mouse though - F6 has a lightbulb and F7 has nothing. Going to sit and try everything now I have an idea of what do do.

Thanks again people. Will update if I am successful.

Been through loads of things to do and googled etc. With the mouse not working its hard to navigate with the keys so its a long slow process.

Yeah - somewhere - having to wear till OH gets in because he did a "man" clear up at the weekend and everything isn't where its supposed to be. He also has a "man drawer" so I presume it will be in there! Hoping it will be easier to use so I can fix the problem - if it doesn't then she'll just have to use the usb mouse in the meantime. Thanks.

YOU are a little star!!! That worked - thank you so much!

(Didn't get chance to google further as hungry mouths to feed - you have saved so much hassle)

Thanks again - and to everyone else who helped - repped.

Ooh clever one.

Knowing the model number always helps :p

Glad you got it sorted!
