Just upgraded to 50mb BB off virgin today as i do a bit of online gaming and was not happy with the lag i have been getting on my 10mb line, anyways i have been doing tests on speedtest.org all afternoon and i am getting speeds of 20 to 30 mb, i have spoken to Virgin this afternoon and they tell me they are having problems between 4pm and 11pm, now i am in work all day so this directly affects the times i wish to go online - they said the system is overloaded with too many IP adresses, fair enough but that is not my problem, am based in north Liverpool btw

Thoughts on this?

Most ISP's will say this. The only one I know who didn't (not sure if that is still the case) is Be but they don't do that speed I don't think.

I have sky 20mb and it never drops, what ever the time of day

Utter rubbish about the 'too many IP addresses' if anything that's an admitance by them that they have too many people using too little bandwidth

Yeah, I knew what you meant, I was being sarky. I know a few people on Sky 20mb bb and none have ever seen double figures.

The download speed of your line has little to do with online gaming lag etc - I used to play online with a .5mb connection and get a perfect ping/lag.

It's no doubt congestion on the line or a bad ping path to the server you're playing on.
#13
I play PC gaming happily with a 3g dongle... My speed isn't that high an I get the occasional lag spike that really doesn't effect me, and my speed is really low... http://www.speedtest.net/result/1239253187.png

I play with 4mb and I own!

I'm on 50mb Virgin, just got this.... No issues playing COD any time of the day/night:

I would listen to what this poster has said so much more than the others

He is spot on - people have been gaming online for years now, its got nothing to do with the bandwidth and everything to do with the ping times and lag

Upgrading the connection speed is not ever going to help.

oh - and to the person on Sky getting 20mb and it never dropping - hello Walter :|

I'm on 50 and my speed never drops below 48, ring up the dedicated 50Mbps team. Google it and you'll soon find the 0800 number. Best to ring mon-fri during the day so you don't get an off shore call centre!!

But as said above on the not so super Hub make sure IP flood detection and firewall are turned off and only ever do a speedtest wired and not wireless.

To all the people on 20Mb Virgin.

Did you know you can upgrade to 30Mb possibly for free (any maybe reduce your monthly fee as well). It is now £18.50 for 30Mb Virgin Broadband.

Note if you have not got a Superhub (which is a wireless N modem/router) you will have to pay £30 for that. You need it to get 30Mb broadband.
If you already have one the £30 fee is waived.

i have Sky 20mb and i never get more that 3 - 4mb due to my home being "too far from the hub" ... :(

My 50Mb is fine (still not got the faster upload speeds yet though)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1239793857.png

Virgin are in the process of updating the network infrastructure in order to provide customers with a 10:1 ratio for download/upload and also to roll out the 100Mb broadband.

You can see their upload speed increase schedule here
http://shop.virginmedia.com/content/dam/allyours/pdf/Schedule-010311.pdf

Might give you a rough idea of when you can expect the speed issues to be sorted (although if you do have the superhub I would check out the virgin forums for some tips on how to speed it up)

The OP will need to have done his research on the many reasons for his issues before contacting Virgin as they do like to fob people off if they can get away with it.

Far, far easier would be to give Cfosspeed free trial a try - it can be set to optimize either ping or speed.

Weve just upgraded from 50mb to 100mb with virgin. We dont play games so cant comment on that. But for 98% of the time the service is fine. Top download speed weve had so far is 91mb. Our upload speed is around 6mb

How much extra do you pay for the 100MB?

I'm on Virgin 50mb and Speedtest.net gives me really inaccurate results depending on what server i connect to.

Try this one instead .....

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Gives me a more accurate result most of the time.

whats a ping?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping

Ping (Packet Internet Groper) is a computer network administration utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network and to measure the round-trip time for messages sent from the originating host to a destination computer. The name comes from active sonar terminology.

Ping operates by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to the target host and waiting for an ICMP response. In the process it measures the time from transmission to reception (round-trip time)[1] and records any packet loss. The results of the test are printed in form of a statistical summary of the response packets received, including the minimum, maximum, and the mean round-trip times, and sometimes the standard deviation of the mean.

Ping may be run using various options (command line switches) depending on the implementation that enable special operational modes, such as to specify the packet size used as the probe, automatic repeated operation for sending a specified count of probes, time stamping options, or to perform a ping flood. Flood pinging may be abused as a simple form of denial-of-service attack, in which the attacker overwhelms the victim with ICMP echo request packets.

It's like sending a self addressed letter to yourself and than measuring how long it takes to get back. It's largely dependent on whether they have turbo vans and how far the post office is away as well.

now be a dear and finish that ironing :p
