Anyone here in the forces?

micoo Avatar

Im joining the army in a few months and was wondering what physical condition i should be in by the time i start training? Im on a massive fitness bender at the moment and have a pretty strict diet planned to start tomorrow. Im not unfit and looking at the tests they put you through in the selection process i would pass them at the moment but i want to be more than ready when i go to training.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I would plan to be in the best condition you could possibly be in to be honest. Then you will find things easier than other, but obviously still not easy! I wish you all the best of luck!

Overall cross training mate, you cannot be too fit tbh,try to concentrate on any weak areas as the PTI's will pick on this straight away

What area are you going into?

Will you be killing any of THEM?

Long as your strong in the arm in thick in the head the Army will love you.

May I ask you if you are joining up so you can protect queen and county or is there another more personal reason to join.

Don't know about the army, but I know someone in the marines who runs 20 miles a day with 8 stone of weight in a rucksack... he's pretty damn fit!

Im definately strong in the arm haha not thick in the head though, im applying as an officer for that reason :p

Im joining cos its the only thing ive wanted to do since i was a kid, tried bar work, shop work and university and hated them all, cant see myself ever doing anything else tbh and i have a slight family tradition in the army too

loved my time in....

You don't have to be super fit when you join as the amount of phys you do in basic training soon gets you to the level they want from you anyway, but a basic fitness level is required .. as long as you can run a mile and half in under 10 mins you'll be fine :) ... keep with the running and also maintain upper body strength which you'll need for carrying the weight... !!! there'll be alot of it - pull ups and sit ups are also a basic fitness test so do a lot of those

like you i come from a diverse military background - only my father didn't go in - had uncles/grandparents in all of the tri-services... got the tin on my shirt to go with the tours i did... i had a really good time... hope you do too !!!

Marines are like the top dogs, gotta be some kinda superman! lol
Got mates in the army, marines and RAF so could try get advice off them if you need it, although the army one is currently serving in afghanistan x

i initially went to join the Marines as a young naive 17 year old ... i walked into the careers office, sat down at the Army desk and said - "i wanna be a marine"... I politely directed to the Navy desk... kinda went downhill from there!!!! left it 6 months then joined the Army instead :p

Cheers!

I can manage the mile and a half in under 10 mins no problem, push ups, pull ups and sit ups arnt a problem either just want to be more than prepared for the physical side of it :)

dont join, they just see you as dispensable human life, you are better then that. Why would you want to kill people you never met and have no problems with, or even direct or indirectly aid the killing of innocent people?
#14
pratice "tabbing" ( Tactical Advance to Battle ) with weight on your back - don't try running with 35lb of weight on... get a good pair of boots and go for a fast walk for a few miles... this will increase your lung capacity and strengthen your back for the inevitable !!! plus get your feet used to wearing boots and going for long tabs ... get the blisters out of the way before you join up !!!

There is a good section on fitness on the Army site

http://www.army.mod.uk/join/20261.aspx

Its what I used when I joined and found it helpful

Our forces are out there trying to prevent the killing of say 52 innocent civillians travelling to work on the bus and tube ... hoping to make sure this never happens again!
If i had the choice to go back and do it all again i would in half a heart beat ! i don't regret one single decision i made as a soldier whatever the outcome was !

Micoo i wouldn't worry about the PHYS side of things, i would worry more about the respect. There again if your going to be a "officer" make sure you get into writing alot, and pushing a good load of paper! ;)

So who's top dogs in your eyes LLM? Besides SF.

I done 8 years, currently at RMR Tyne.
You'll love it and you'll never meet mates like you do in the forces. You going to Glencourse for your selection? I spent most my time in the Infantry, but do yourself a favour join a corps get a trade.

Initial selection was easy when I done it, x amount of push ups, x amount of sit ups and a 2.4Km run in under 10:30 I think.
#31
@ Micco - when are you doing your selection course ?
and have you done your aptitude test yet ?

If you do well on that - the careers Sgt will try and disuade you from joining the ground pounders tbh ! probably try and push you towards a career minded regt - Engineers/Signals maybe ??
#32
@ Paddy - i'm actually contemplating joining the sister site in Leeds... not sure though.. @33 i think i may be a little old to start playing soldiers again ! !
#33
Well yes i do agree that at one point it was the RM. Not anymore, and not for at least the last few years.
#34
Agree with join a corp. Please don't be a officer, unless you talk like youv'e got a toilet brush up your ass, and wear chinos :)

With all the deployments in the last few years some of the infantry regiments have become just as good as if not more so the the Para's and Marines ... i have a lot of respect for them.. and all those against the British forces can go **** themselves ;)

less then 0.000000000000001% of the population in the UK have been affected by "terrorism" or know anybody who has.

at least 50% of people in Iraq have had an innocent family or friend killed, and around 25% or so in Afghanistan, oh and there the bad guys huh.

Why anybody would want to join any army to kill or passively kill another human being is beyond me, inhumane. If anybody thinks its to protect us, protect us from what? As pointed above, there is no war on terror expect the propaganda promoted by the Media. Too many sheeple fall for it, and look whats happening, you have no money, your giving all your money to the government and banks. We have noone to blame but ourself.

micoo, you are a nice guy, a lovely unique individual, dont have the blood of unknown people on your hands, do something else mate, you are better then this
