I went to the docs on friday night and she prescribed me codeine for the tension headache and pain in my face (sinus pain etc)

i thought it was getting better but its really flared up tonight, finding it hard to swallow my saliva.....

and before anyone asks i will be going back to the docs tomorrow, hopefully if i can get a appointment....

Just wanted to know how long yours lasted and how bad it actually got....

Cheers

I had pharyngitis 20 odd years ago. I remember being really ill for a couple of days, i.e fever, drowsy, very sore throat, neck and head and on strong meds. I couldnt eat for a couple of days and I couldn't lift my head off the pillow for the first day. I was in my early twenties at the time and, from memory, I recovered quite quickly after the initial 48 hour period. I know this won't make you feel any better (you did ask), but it is one of the nastiest virus's I have ever had (second only to a middle ear infection three years ago where I actually heard my own eardrum explode.) Ouch. Hope you feel better soon. Get to your GP and then rest and ride it out.

It is viral so all the GP can do is give you strong pain killers and send you home to rest. Try to drink fluids and use face cloths or tea towels dampened with tepid water on your forehead to try to cool you down a bit.

Sore throat of varying severity are very common, most are viral. Painful to eat foods

I was however alarmed when you said it was painful to swallow saliva. Anyone that is unable to swallow fluids must be seen immediately, possibility of quinsy.

I had pharyngitis about ten years ago and felt very ill for several days my symptoms got worse and I could not swallow saliva at all. the doctor admitted me to hospital as my throat and airways was closing up. 4 days in the hospital on strong medication sorted me, but I still didnt feel quite right for several weeks after. I know i was probably a worst case of it but this viral infection can get very nasty if not treated properly.
