No sorry i mean like a t-shirt or jumper that i can use the material eg cotton and sew together with sewing machine....just wanted a handy guide for the basics but it seems there arent any, im not sure if because its that straight forward or just because there are no guides on it.

Also then wanted a guide on how to customise the jumper ie. different neck line. adding trims etc.

to be fair jumpers are generally knitted hon... so the comments you've received are understandable.

Perhaps you're thinking of something sewn?

Not sure what else your options might be!

If you gonna make a woolly jumper from scratch... first you need a sheep :)

have to disagree I always wanted to make my own clothes like the cavemen used to, in fact if anyone has any links where I can find out how to make my own shoes, socks and possibly some mittens with the string so like a silly billy I dont lose one then I'd be eternally gratefull.

Oh and they have to be from leaves, twigs and possibly cat skin(if I can catch next doors).:-D

you just need a pattern then hon.. you get them in their millions.

You cut out the pattern pin it to the material, cut out the pieces and sew em all up together.

Dressmaking is easy peasy... maybe it's not taught at school anymore?

Check out large stores such as debenhams etc for dressmaking patterns or pick one up on ebay even.

what about picking apart something you already have that you like the shape of, then use the pieces as a template so you could use different fabrics and textures. Maybe swapping a zip for buttons etc

Thanks!! I will have a look...i guess it is easier than i thought then.

They still do textiles at school but when I was there i wasnt interested as we did boring stuff like making juggling balls! Now a few years later and i think making my own clothes would be cool and means nobody else would be wearing the same stuff.

Lots have changed in school, when I used to go to a Catholic school,it was like the 2nd primary school I attended, well a nun used to come in and we used to do sewing and stuff, they don't do anything like this now in primary schools,be all health and safety like needles and things.

I think they need to do more basic everyday learning activities at school, basic cooking etc from an earlier age, even if they don't get a hands on approach with some stuff,it's the observation thats helpful too.

Once you get your head around the basics it is pretty easy. You just have to make sure you place the pattern the right way onto the grain of the material and on the right side of the fabric, and always hem your seams properly!! the last one i say with experience...i made a dress once and was in a hurry so didn't finish off my seams and ended up with half a dress by the end of the evening.
