Anyone know anything about Flip HD mino or ultra camcorders

Hi
My son has now suddenly dropped on me that he would like one of these for Xmas. Wondered if anyone has used one and what did you think,
Reviews on Amazon tend to be mixed. Some love them and others find them annoying.
Thanks

flips are brilliant-I burned a dvd of our last disney holiday from mine and the sharpness and colour are incredible for such a small compact device-one click to burn a dvd or upload to youtube-its just so simple to use.

yes it isnt gonna be as good as a top quality fill size hd camcorder but if its a compact ,fit in the pocket device you want, you cant go wrong.

Thats what i am thinking...we had a camcorder and due to size never bothered taking it out. My son is 13 and just wants reasonable quality quick input stuff.
Did you find the software easy to use...we are not big on technical stuff.
Also the one big gripe people had was it is very poor with movement..cant remember what they called it something like no motiion control....have you ever taken things like kids in garden running around. I think what it will mean is you must stand still to take things rather than moving round. What did yo think of your disney stuff.
Did you get the ultra or mino....as i understand it the ultra can have more memory and you can put AA's in the mino has to be plugged into the computer.

thanks i agree for the price i dont think i will go wrong. i think the people who dont like it are probably more into the camcorder and all the technical stuff. we just want to see our memories. i havent actually seen one yet except a photo so not sure how different they will be for carrying. Obviously the mino is smaller but more people seem to like the ultra.
Did you find the software easy to understand..thats usually our downfall with computer things.

its simple to use-the software is built into the camera-plug it in and send to youtube or burn a dvd/edit with one click. we have the ultra.

cant agree with anyone who says it cant capture fast motion-I have filmed all the rollercoasters in disney and you cant get any faster than that! I took nearly 2 hours of video at disney in october, day after we came home, burned the dvd and watched on a 42 inch lcd-vibrant colours, great sound and nice and sharp.

Whats better between the Flip and the Kodak zi8?

The main difference i can see is that with the kodak things go onto sd cards rather than an internal memory which i guess means you can take more without going to your computer. Both will take rechargeable batteries i think.
after looking at reviews etc most of the morning it seems that if you have a flip you love it but the Zi8 which is slightly newer tends to come out better if compared. However because you have to buy cards its also more expensive.
Gut feeling at mo is they are very similar but it would be nice to go away for a few days without having to take computer so the zi8 is going ahead slightly.

Does the flip have a proper optical zoom?

Does your budget stretch to a Xacti? :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sanyo-VPC-CG10EBK-Video-Photo-Camera/dp/B001SAMTLY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261148553&sr=8-1

That gives HD video at 720p resolution and 10MP still images.

The zoom is a 5x optical so when you zoom in you don't lose picture quality straight away. As far as I know most, if not all, of the Flip cameras only have digital zoom, so when you zoom in the images get less clear.

thanks that would be fine for us but our son definitely wants the usb thing attached. think its an image thing. After looking at both the flip and the zi8 to be honest i had already written off the zoom as both are not good supposed to be very jumpy but i have chatted about it all with him. i will show him this one but pretty sure it will not fit his image.....:whistling:

Of course if he wants to be able to plug in to USB straight away you could always use one of these:
