Anyone know anything about the Nuchal Scans?

babyblue Avatar

Had mine today and they said that the scan was ok but when put together with the blood results gives me a 1 in 336 of a downs baby.

A bit worried now as before I was told I was a 1 in 1206 chance.

Has anyone else felt anxious about this?

I wouldnt stress huni, i know its easy for me to say but ive heard of people with far worse results that that - think one was 1 in 12 - and her baby was born without downs. Best of luck with everything!

Have you been offered an amnio? xx

What I don't understand is I am 12 weeks + 3 days and measurement was 1.8mm, she said this is fine, however said that when put together with my bloods it made the risk increase go from 1 / 1206 to the 1 /336 chance.

This makes me think my blood results must have been really really bad! There are some numbers on this scan sheet from my bloods but I can't make head nor tail of what they mean eg one reads : PAPP-A: 0.537IU/L equivalent to 0.3040 MoM - anyone know if this is in the normal range?

I feel highly anxious now, maybe not such a great idea having the tests done!

they consider anything over 300 a low risk hun i was about the same with my little girl. But lower with my little boy but at my 23 weeks scan they though something was wrong with him as the nuchal fold was too big. I had to go to kings collage hospital for a intensve scan but the man said they scan tell with things such as downs pretty easy as it wont just be 1 thing its alot of things...

Heart
liver
having not much nasal bone
small tummy

so i really wouldnt worry hun like i said they consider over 300 low risk x

No I haven't been offered that, I may phone up and ask to see doc tomorrow to discuss my blood test results to put my mind at ease. I am guessing though that if the scan says 1.8mm and the sonographer said I am fine the bloods don't matter too much.

They normally check it every scan you have hun .... its the fluid on the back of the head.
The bloods are the triple test and not all places do it x

I turned it down as the results would make no difference to me :)

Its optional here in Plymouth.

Basically they ask you to go for a 12 weeks dating scan and its upto you whether you opt to have the Nuchal test in with it.

Never had this test with my 3 year old, something about seeing numbers on paper makes you alot more anxious!

Basically the sonographer said * when you walked in you had a 1 in 1206 chance of a baby with Downs, that risk is now a 1 in 336 *

Like I said to my partner, in reality the baby hasn't changed, if it had Downs it still has it, if it didn't have Downs it won't have it now. Numbers on paper won't change whats already there growing. Still makes you anxious though.

Basically I wouldn't abort or give away my baby if it had Downs, or anything else wrong with it for that matter. I'd love it whatever. Partner thinks a lil differently, he seems to think we wouldn't cope very well. However I guess now I have all these figures I wish I'd not got the tests done.

You can ask your midwife to have a chat with you about it...in fact...shouldn't they have made you an appointment to speak to someone about the results?

They are not the best at communaction.

Eg: had my bloods done on a Thursday, I phoned on the following Monday for the results and was told I am aneamic. Was also told a script would be left for me and when I picked it up on the Monday it had been written out on the Friday and marked URGENT. I mean surely they could of phoned me on the Friday......

I have a helpline number for Midwife I will phone in the morning.

You should be able to see a Genetic Counsellor or something if it's down at high risk or least that what I have seen on posters and stuff around this area in hospitals.

I've had a bit of a conflicting 21 week scan. Basically my 12 wk Nuchal Fold Scan come back fine with the combined blood tests, like they were 1 in 60,000 chance for 1 problem and something else for another.

Anyway upon the 21 wk scan they found these cysts on the brain and they a sign sometimes of Edwards Syndrome, anyway with these present I think the chance as gone up loads.
I had nothing else tested for since, had a scan about 28wks and they gone which is usually the case, although risk still there.
I not really thought about it lately other than on the 1st few days afterwards, and I don't do abortions anyway, not for me,I've got another 5wks or so left to go of the pregnancy.Midwife told me not to worry bout it,they couldn't see another marker on the scan and they checked through a lot.

There are tons of tests now on these screening programmes, much more come about in the last 4 yrs or so in various healthtrusts.

I phoned up today and spoke to a Midwife at the call centre. She seemed reasurring, said that the number you get in the beggining ( I was given 1206 ) is just a statistic for you age. The number you get after the blood test / scan is a more accurate reading for your body.

Logically when I was carrying my little boy and didn't have this test my risk could have been 1 in 50 for all I know, just seeing those numbers makes it feel more scary.

The Midwife told me not to worry and enjoy my pregnancy.

I'm thinking maybe if you get very stressed and upset easily like I do and you are thinking about having the tests, maybe think it through alot before going ahead.

Anyway....next scan is 12th October so I'm going to look forward to that now.

Thanks to all for all your help and reasurrance xxx

My blood test came back as1 in 313 at 39 years of ago.
My husband was really really paranoid about Downs as we already have a daughter with mild cerebal palsey.
He wanted me to have the Amnio I think primarily due to my age. I did not want this, in my mind it did not matter what the baby was like I would not have had an abortion so why risk the Amnio as there is a chance of miscarriage.
Luckily my baby girl was perfect and now 5 months old but I went through hell with him at the time over this subject.
I know people say try not to worry but you cant help it, it was all I thought about. Speak to your midwife, she is the best person to talk to.

Enjoy your pregnancy - its is such a lovely time

You know you said your bloods came back as 1 in 313 may I ask where you got the result from? My doctors surgery doesn't even have the results back yet from the bloods taken but the hospital report had a few figures yesterday but didn't have the 1 in ... chance written on them. Only when they put the bloods with the measurement did they come up with 1 in 336 chance for me.

I am glad that your little baby was fine.

Thanks for taking the time to write to me x

i dont think they do it in wales as it has never been mentioned to me b4 i know my scan on sept 3rd is just routine dating scan no mention of nuchal fold
i know they do a blood test and it gives ur chance of having a baby with downs but it does not give definate answers and i wouldnt risk an amnio so no point me having it really
my auntie has down syndrome and she lives happily with her husband in their own flat :)

This might be a personal question...

but if you have any bleeding during pregnancy it can push these rates up somewhat falsely.

I had a 1 in 52 risk for spina bifida with my eldest daughter.... she was born perfectly normal x x

Remember these tests do NOT give you an ultimate yes or no answer.. they give you some idea of statistical probability x x

I've had no bleeding, but I got pregnant just 1 week after coming after the pill which I had been on for 3 years so I am wandering if that may have something to do with the bloods being a bit different - don't know if it would affect hormones in the blood or anything.

not as far as I know sweets, just listen to the docs and make sure you ask any questions you need to... have you decided to do any further testing?

when I was given the 1 in 52 chance, I shut the docs out and said no more tests. If I'd have done them I might have known earlier that she was fine but at the time I couldnt have gone through it x x

I would not have any more tests due to the fear and risk of miscarraige. I am going try and forget the number. Didn't have the tests with my 3 year old and he is perfect. Just have to hope nothing is / goes wrong but if it does I'll just have to cope like anyone else. Numbers on paper just make it more scary then not knowing I think.
