they will check ticket against passport...no?

Even though you don't need your passport to travel surely you have to take it with you, if so that would be a giveaway!!

Is it really worth the risk? how would you feel if confronted and caught out? Possible consequences for fare dodging.

Agree. For the worry it would cause and the fine you could get - its not worth it. Surely as suggested above they would see his age from the passport?

Why don't you need your passport, I have always been asked and had it checked......or are you not leaving the country??

they're gonna have to check his passport?

Yeah, you need a passport to leave the UK, so they'll surely check against it.

I know they don't always check against stuff in the UK but you will require to carry your official document (passport) as standard, so it'll surely be a quick check.

i thought that would be the case
only reason i ask is that on the bluewater deal there i cannot select a child fare.
and if i book it seperately we won't be seated together which would be a problem for a 5 year old!

They check the passports quite throughly on the Eurostar customs, and they seem to be more particular when you leave on the Eurostar to come back.

If you were talking of going on P&O Ferries, customs slack going out of Dover, everytime I've been, not even checked passports properly.
Example the bus picks you up from collecting point to take you to the ferry,on gets custom worker, stands at front of bus, tells everyone to hold their passports up,thats fine,he gets off. He can't see the passports clearly of people at all!
