AVG, Avast or Comodo.

All can be found here: www.filehippo.com.

Several people on the site believe that AVG has lost it's edge, is bloated and misses viruses - I've still yet to find a problem with AVG and have been using it for years. But it's up to you, I believe any of the three will suffice and work for you.

What problems have you had and what are you using now?

It missed viruses (this was years ago).

I have been using avast for the past 8 years, never missed a beat.

It defo missed one for me and it was an old virus too that I thought it should have picked up? That doesn't mean to say that otehr virus checkers wouldn't have missed it too though - I'm not anti AVG - just a bit more balanced that I used to be when reccomending it.

Work pay for a symantec virus checker for me now - actually thats a point - don't some banks offer free virus checker software now with current accounts?

Love it when people say that. If your only using one package how do you know it never misses anything?:-D

Because my pc has been ok?

That is the whole idea of a virus checker, uninterrupted use of the pc.

if you've got your broadband with virgin media you can download a free virgin one - been using it over a year - no probs :)

I believe Kapersky (sp?) was being given away free if you had an account with someone. Would recommend that over the freebiesm if you can get it free :P

Certainly, I wouldn't say I have experienced all the major free AVs, simply because I haven't had problems with AVG up to now (no problems that have appeared anyway, they could be festering in the background, but I believe something would have cropped up by now)

Saying that, I don't do any dodgy downloading or visit suspect sites @) But nothing is foolproof.

Yep, my uncle has this and it seems pretty good - I think it's powered by Kapersky or someone isn't it? Seems like a good all-in-one package.

thats the strict definition of a computer-virus. a silent software that datamines or uses your computer as a botnet client without "interrupting" the working of your PC does not qualify as a virus then?

BTW I use Kaspersky internet security FREE from CBE (posted here few months back) but still have Free Comodo Internet Security installed (doesnt run).

Been ok? You mean you have not had a destructive one, but what about the rest?

I think were in the 'all eggs in one basket' scenario.

I use Avast as my main antivirus but also use AVG for scanning only.

For my banking I use a linux based bootable usb.

Ps this is not aimed at you its just for people to have a think about. I think what were all agreed on that using any of the mentioned ones is much better that not using one at all.

There was a freebie for Panda on here other day, never heard of it though so couldn't recommend

If you bank with barclays go here http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=homefreegroup&value=10662&target=_blank&site=pfs
if you're isp is o2 go here http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/security.jsp
Or this 9 months free Kaspersky 2009 Security suite & you can download 2010 version from the Kaspersky site for the latest suite. http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/449724/free-kaspersky-2009-security-suite-?
If none of the above is no good for you try this http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I used to use AVG but found that it seemed to be slowing my pc down so have changed to Avast, this uses up much less resources and does not slow me down!! Also in the 4 months or so I have been using it it has picked up a few malicious websites and a couple of trojans, AVG had picked up nothing other than tracking cookies for about 3 years!! This may be just a coincidence or maybe it's not!! ;-)

Riddle me this - Can Avast be used in conjunction with AVG? AVG does run somewhat in real-time (and flags up viruses discovered in websites etc), and I believe Avast is a real-time scanner? So surely they would conflict?

If they can be run in unison though, then I will definitely have both :p I await your reply!

Avast slowed my PC down a lot, I use AVG no probs, though I was told by the AOL man that as I had there broadband I didnt need any Virus softwaer
