You have to subscribe to Skys HD service, pretty sure of that. So don't bother.

I dont think you will be able to straight swap the boxes as you need your set-up to include sky plus which your hd box will have but a normal sky box doesnt.

I bought a SKY+ box on ebay and a dual LNB to replace a normal digibox. Fitted it myself and everything worked OK.

Thanks for all reply. I don't wish to subscribe to SKY HD, but I just want to replace the box as bryanspink did, to receive free HD content (BBC, Channel 4, ITV). I did a calculation and I could save about £80 if I bought the Sky HD box from Ebay.

1year with Tiscali 8mb unlimited broadband+Pay once watch forever + Sky HD box from ebay
-25(quidco)+30(tiscali installation)+(15*12months) +75(powf) =£260 + £210 = £570

1year with Sky TV 1mix+HD subscription+16mb unlimited Broadband+Talk+BT line rental
-130(quidco)+229(installation&box)+(36*12months)+(12months*10 BTline rental) =£651

You need to ring sky to pair your card up with the new box plus i thought BBC HD was the only free hd service that you can get .

a sky HD box is the same as a sky+ box with HD capabilities, dont need to be so patronising, and yes it will work but you'll only get the free to air HD channels such as BBC HD @ the moment, why dont you get wait till freesat if you are only wanting a pay once watch forever package from sky.

A Sky + box is a Sky + box...
A Sky HD box is a Sky HD box... just cos it does the same thing as the Sky + box with added HD compatability doesn't mean jack, they are two entirely different boxes, and I was trying to make it clear for everyone. Just cos somebody managed to fiddle with the Sky + box doesn't mean it will work with a Sky HD box.

I'm not sure if the SKY HD box will pick up the FTA HD channels without a paired card (which costs £10 pm).

Your best getting a Technomate HD box, and you'll be to able to pick up about 50 HD channels (FOC) from europe (in English - inc the BBC etc channels you listed above)

Chris, I visited http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/hdtv.htm and saw there are quiet a number of choices. In order to receive other HD channels, do I need a different dish or Sky mini dish is enough?

I did a bit of research on this before christmas as I intend to update my AV setup soon (this is really only for those with a "proper" Sky sub).

As far as I can tell the best place to get a Sky HD box is from www.satbuyer.co.uk (near ebay prices with a warranty) and the dual cables/lnb's from http://www.satelliteonline.co.uk/ .

I think if you connect the HD box phone sky and get them to pair it as a sky+ box, it works without them demanding you take an HD sub (also Sky+ is free to sky subscribers). You would then get whatever free HD content that is available on Sky (BBC and maybe C4).

You'd need a bigger dish mate - smallest I'd go is 80cm - 90cm for more choice.

The good thing about that is that you can "patch" it - pm me for more info.
