Does anyone know, from past experience how long these take to arrive. I really need to use a railcard this Friday. Not sure if I will receive it in time

Yes you can buy tickets in advance either from a train station or online from www.nationalrail.co.uk
You need to put in the stations you are travelling from and to, the dates that you want to travel, then click on SEARCH. Then scroll down to fill in Number of Passengers and Railcards section. You get the best prices if you book 12 weeks in advance.
However, you would need a valid railcard whilst travelling so you would have to but the half price one if you are travelling in August. It might still work out cheaper for you to buy a railcard even if you only use it for one journey. If you use nationalrail.co.uk you can compare prices with and without a railcard so you can work out if its worthwhile for you or not

It might still work out cheaper to buy the half price railcard than to buy the full price tickets.

Yes, you can just buy your tickets at the station (as long as you have a child with you). You can also book them over the internet and in advance.
