Astoisih from £ land seemed pretty good when we had our cream carpet, however the best thing to do is getting the whole carpet cleaned otherwise you will start to see the edges of where you have cleaned up to.

But in our case, having weighed up the cost of cleaning (2-3x a year) it made a lot of sense to just get the damn thing pulled up and replaced with a very nice laminate.

agreed carpet should really be changed ever few years and you would if you saw what was in it, I have ceramic floors thougout and I steam them twice a week the pad is black so you can imagine what is is your carpet.

You didn't say what kind of stain it is?
found this carpet stain chart. You can look up each type of stain for ideas on how to remove it.

I would try liquid laundry detergent and scrub it then suck up the water with a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. That way the stain doesn't go deeper into the carpet pile. Good luck!

its a dry steamer, just like a mop take about 15 minutes to do all floors and I know its clean. - My kitchen is 25' X 25', cant imagine what carpet would look like in a kitchen that big and I usually have 14 people for sunday lunch so yes I love my un-carpeted floors

I have been looking aswell for a decent cleaner, just happened to see one in Argos, its from vax but a ultra cleaner and it has very good reviews, a bit pricey but I think it lasts a while.
