I'm off to Southampton ... I booked a random night away at a Travelodge for £9 ... so will find something to do. Thinking of wandering around the docks or the shopping centre ... unless anyone knows anything better to do?

I'm awake. Fell asleep at 10:30. Woke up thirty minutes ago with Dave channel closing down, and have spent the time trying to figure out how to turn my friend's acoustic emissions project into something that works, and into something that can function on an automated level.

And I have. God, I'm brilliant. Now, to put it in words that make some sort of sence...

Acoustic emissions? As in some kind of wierd music? Or some kind of interesting science?

I know that lots of people have posted deals from their 'Monster Sale' ... maybe the HUKD mods are bored of the lots of DVD deals they have?

Interesting, and incredibly complex, science. We've been talking about it for a couple of months now, but I finally got to go down to the lab and check out the equipment today. Well, yesterday. It's some clever stuff, but I don't think my friend really understands some of the stumbling points fully. For starters, the sampling rate they have to use is obscene. We're talking into the 5MHz range here, and when you've got four sensors all recording at 32bit resolution, that's some 640MB worth of data per second. PCI-E 4x can just about cope with this, but storage? Send it to a RAM disk, and you can maybe get 11 seconds of recordings onto a 7GB ramdisk. Recording that to disk, and you'd need minimum of a 10 disk striped array. Fortunately, since only a few ms worth of sample is required to record the activities of a machine over the course of maybe a few dozen of its revs per minute, it's not all bad. But things remain tricky, particularly in terms of realtime monitoring.

What I've drafted is a proposal that solves three of the problems the project currently faces, which is the matter of patterns and recognition of changes in data over time, technical feasibility, and applicability to technologies. I've introduced a few new problems and limitations of my own, but between the notes, the source code I've drafted, and the nice little pictures I've drawn that back it all up, I've got a solution that could be implemented right now. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that I've got work in the morning, I'd be grafting away in Visual Studio and getting ready to break stuff with hammers right now.

Anyway, I;m going to get geek-excited and won't be able to sleep if I don't call it a day now. Best try and get some sleep while I can.
