I've read the upgrade only takes 15 mins somewhere but I can't find many more details... is it executed like a 'service pack style' upgrade (i.e. no need to reinstall everything else)... if your upgrading from Leopard 10.5.8... help appreciated.

I'm currently running Snow Leopard.
I upgraded earlier from 10.5.8.
I use Time Machine regularly so I didn't feel like I needed to make another back up or a bootable clone.
Yes it works just like a service pack upgrade, no need to re-install anything, everything is automatically migrated over. I've not checked if my old Bootcamp works with Snow Leopard, now that Bootcamp 3 is out.
My major apps work eg Adobe products but I've not checked all my apps.
I do notice that my plugins for safari no longer work but I'm sure there will be updates for them soon.

A nice upgrade overall, nothing in-your-face different, but you'll notice all the little things as you use the OS.

[edit] Also I took my MBP about 45 mins to install from an external drive. I assume it'll take longer if you'll be installing from a disc.

There is no actual need to back up before you install Snow Leopard as it is just an upgrade of Leopard so it won't touch any of your data.

I just upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard and didn't bother to back up, it installed within half an hour and all my data (music, photos, games, etc) as all still here.
