In a thread, it surely depends on the users screen size?

Wrong

Wrong,

Hotukdeals is the same size regardless, it just adds grey bars down the site.

On my 1280 screen it fills it to the edge almost on my 1920 it adds big grey bars down the sides.

I post pics at 800*600.

Its got a fixed-maximum width so on a high-width screen yes it might seem you are correct, but not on a screen smaller than 1280 pixels wide. Shrink the window to 1024 pixels wide or 800 pixels wide and the field size where images go will also shrink. So it does depend on the screen resolution (and window size) and posting 800 pixel wide images will not fit on everyones screen!

Websites are scarcely ever designed to look good on a 1600pixel+ width display as its not usually a useful way of viewing content. If you have an HD widescreen display the typical way to use it would be to have 2 windows each using half the width of the screen (as in the new Windows 7 feature) - then each window will be a little over 800 pixels wide on a typical 22" monitor and an 800 pixel wide image will not display properly!

640x480 is probably a better choice all round.
