So got Sky HD installed on Sunday without HD pack and flicking between free to air HD channels and normal channels and could not really tell the difference. definately not worth the extra £10 that $ky ask for.

Get the Sports channels and try going back to SD after watching them in HD and you'll change your mind.

Either that or you have a really poor TV not to see the difference. It's not a old CRT is it??? ;) lol

Speaking of which, have you gone blind yet??

I can't see a whole lot of difference either. Maybe it's because since LCD's have come in the quality of SD has dropped, SD on a CRT is better.

Depends , were the HD channel programs broadcast in HD or upscaled SD ?
#11
Sky is not full hd it's only 1080i not 1080p that's why it's not as good as blu ray movies
#12
dont have sports, got rid years ago cos never watched it.
got 42" 1080p JVC and the wife says it as well, cannot really tell the difference.
when $ky first came out with HD they said it's like going from black and white to colour, nothing like it.
when i went from $ky analouge to $ky digital, you could see the difference, the step up from SD to so called HD is nothing like that.
#13
been years since i used a CRT so cannot compare quality but use a CRT monitor against an lcd monitor and the picture is so much better on a CRTand dont have a blu ray player

Me, I can notice a clear difference when pausing it but no difference with motion, that's comparing DVD's (with a decent upscaler) and Blu-Rays, when using as a PC monitor though I can tell a huge difference though.

another one who needs an eye test, either that or perhaps you should try watching content on a proper set rather than some crappy LG

Big difference on my plasma. Sky Sports News/all sky sports with HD sports big difference. Luxe HD compared to SD version another one with big difference in PQ! You need a better TV.

big difference on my panasonic plasma, can't watch SD now

Some program on the BBC1 HD channel don't actually look that different to the same ones on the SD channel. However a big difference can be seen when switched over to the BBC HD channel.
#23
BBC HD are shows filmed in HD, BBC1 HD is bbc1 upscaled, not all of them are HD

Although there's still a big difference.

On the subject of sky, why can't bbc1 HD be 101, surely there isn't the need for both HD and non HD
#24
well i agree with the op.... can't tell any difference between sd or hd, but then i could never tell the difference between video and dvd, nor casette to cd.
Oh well.........

You do realise you don't watch it through the scart lead :{
#27
Not all broadcasts on the HD channels are in HD. HD is alot better than SD.
#28
You're all comparing SD on LCD/Plasma to HD on LCD/Plasma, which will give a difference

Now try doing a test on SD on CRT to HD on a LCD/Plasma. The difference is minimal
#29
Watch Human Planet on BBC One HD tomorrow 8PM and then tell me if you do not notice any difference 8)

But the OP is comparing SD on LCD to HD on LCD which is the debate. He said himself that he's not had CRT for years.

Two chanals to check. If you carnt see a difrence buy a new tv. Nickaloden And nickaloden HD. I thought that untill I saw these chanals.

Are you saying "old CRT" in the terms its old tech therefore inferior? If thats so you are wrong since things like CRT monitors could produce HD for years and SD in general looks amazing on them(especially if you get a good quality one)

Many LCD's are awful for SD content and meh for HD.
#34
sd through crt is very watchable. In fact imo it still beats many "high tech" tvs today in terms of quality.

sd through lcd is rubbish
#35
I can only see a difference from SD / HD if I sit too close to my TV.
#36
I can see the difference very clearly on sport channels. Whether it's worth a tenner a month for the same channels, just a bit shinier, is a different matter altogether.

Sd sky looks rubbish on my LCD but the same channels through the built in free view tuner on the LCD look pretty good as does the picture from my sagem free view recorder uin hdmi. So my conclusion would be SD sky looks poor but SD free view is ok. Hd sky is great but finding it harder to justify paying extra for it

You can easily tell the difference if you have both your TV & source set up correctly.

I'd say that under 42" & you cant really see "that" much of a difference, but as soon as you get to 50", its a completely different ball game.

I'd even say that the foreign HD channels do actually look much sharper than the UK HD channels for some reason as well.

Went to Florida a couple of years ago and was sat in a restaurant which was showing baseball in HD. Aside from the garishly set colours, the PQ was superior to our HD.

I've got a panasonic 46" screen and the difference between HD and SD is huge! Using the built in HD freesat i prefer watching where i can the HD channels!

As someone said BBC HD is pure HD TV, the BBC ONE/ITV One is generally upscaled which isnt as good quality but still an improvement, but when football is on in High def then it tends to be HD filmed.

Saying about HD, Less than a month till Formula 1 starts in HD TV which should be really good!

I can't tell the difference either! My OH flicks back between the channels saying how can't you tell. But I just can't! My SIL is the same too my brothers TV is huge and he has HD and was going mad at us for not being able to tell any difference.
