Tiscali tried to take the money out of my acount on the 20th, instead of the 28th of the month, leading to a £15 bank charge as I had no notification.

Anyone else been stung by this?

They legally have to let you know at least 10 working days before they amend a Direct Debit. So you should call them and make sure they also refund your bank charges.

Yes same happened to my mum and they are not going to reimburse her for the bank charge either.

They said we should of checked our account online more so that we would of seen the notification as we no longer get paper bills.

Yep this has been happening the past couple of months - didn't catch out the rents though because there was money in the account - not supposed to come out till the first but came out on the 21st one last month and 17th this month.

What's happening with it?

Sorry it might not be 10 days, but they have to let you know a reasonable amount of time in advance anyway, and if they were bringing it forward by 8 days you should have been made well aware before the 20th. I said 10 days because this is what we use at work and what I've had with other companies but just remembered it can vary depending on the company and how long they want to use.
Either way you don't seem to have had reasonable notice/any at all.

this is the notice that is online

"Earlier this year, we notified you of the introduction of early payment collections. Direct Debit payments will now be taken a minimum of 3 working days after this notification instead of 10 working days. Please read below carefully and ensure that you have sufficient funds in your account.

Payment due dates:

Direct debit payments will be collected on or after the 20th August 2010.
Credit card payments will be collected on or after the 20th August 2010.

If you do not have a direct debit or credit card, payment of this bill is due 20th August 2010.

Only payments received before 5th August will be shown on this month's bill.

Should there be any queries regarding your bill, please contact Customer Support on 0871 222 3311. Lines are open 8am-9pm, Mon-Sun. Calls cost up to 10p/min from a Talk Talk landline. Calls from mobiles and other providers vary."

And as they changed the date of the direct debits, my mum chose to cancel hers and call up instead to make the payment each month as she would prefer to pay at the end of each month.

the bill was due 8 days earlier, so surely it should have been at least 1 week smaller, but no, still billed for a 4 week period. And they say that the bill is due on the 20th so paying at the end of the month is not allowed. But the bill is due on 17th so they only give you 3 days to pay it, isnt this unfair? Even the bank allows you 2 weeks.

We've been stung twice as we pay our mum's Internet as well. We are seriously considering moving ISP but would still like a similar deal to what we on now (up to 8 meg unlimited). They didn't send us any notice at all we only found out by looking at our bank statement. For those who have been charged bank charges I think under the direct debit agreement they are liable for any charges. But I could be mistaken. I'd ask them to pay the charges and I'd tell them that I'll be asking the bank to send them an invoice for the charges incurred.

They didnt send us notice either....but they will argue that there was notification on your account online. As we dont have paper bills no more they said we are required to look at our account online for any changes to our account. Otherwise you have to pay for the paper billing now ... =/
