Phone your local office, they are awfully helpful people. They also have nothing to do at the moment as their computer system is being updated so cant help with normally day-to-day crap

I could not agree more. On the odd occassion I have had tax issues I have just phoned them up and they have been more than helpfull.
Don't forget people on here will only be able to offer their opinion/suggestion, whereas the tax office can actually answer the query correctly and in line with their regulations.

When phoning don't forget to use NO TO 0870 so you can get the phone call cheaper (or free on certain tariffs)!

I work in tax - try me! Further to the answers above, HMRC really are hit and miss. Deal with them daily and sometimes get the biggest ***** in the world, other times nicest, friendliest people ever! Odd bunch!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I was looking for an of the record opinion of something, but the Tax man has given me the answer I was hoping for anyways, so hopefully my letter will be sorted soon as possible.

Cliffs:
Backdated pay for three years underpaid
arrears payment arrives
Liable for higher tax this year because backpay takes me over threshold
Taxman says they will backdate it as long as I can evidence it, but need letter to confirm
