App dev for ipod and iphone. On the cheap.

Hiya...

I bought an iPod for one reason. And that was to log in some medical results and sync online. Treatments have since changed and there's not a single app that covers my needs anymore, so rather than sit on my bum and lob the overpriced and over rated thing at a wall I'd like to have a dabble at making my own.

My knowledge is basic to put it politely. A bit of HTML and lots of WYSIWYGs.

A quick google's left me more confused than when I started. I'd like to ask if there are any clever folk out there who could point me in a good starting direction?

Ta very much!

not much but it's a start..

You need a mac and the dev kit from apple which i think you have to pay for

Sell the ipod and get an android device. You will get more help developing the app and you can let people use your code to develop there own relevant apps.

Thanks for the speedy get back folks. There was a time I though Microsoft were nazicistic (can't find spellcheck) but apple have really gone mad. That site looks interesting though Dcx so ta for that.

I haven't jailbroken it yet as I'd had no real cause before but it's looking like my very next google search will be "jailbreak ipod".

And if all else fails Gavin, I may well end up following your advice. Although I did fancy getting a N8 which is ambiance I think. Damn you Nokia AND apple. Heheh.

You dont have to get an android device now you can develop you app and run it on the emulator (Android Virtual Device (AVD)) then buy some hardware (phone/tablet) to run it on when your finished.

You ideally need a mac to dev on. You can run an app through simulator for free, but have to pay to allow you to debug and run on device. Unless you jail break.

Given you experience, you may be better looking at creating an application in Javascript / HTML and packaging that up. You can only really create basic apps so it may be a little too basic (look at JQtouch and others). Otherwise it may be a steep learning curve to get what you want.

Others options are coming, through flash and Flash Builder (which may be more suited to your skills - using an XML based language (MXML) and actionscript).

Good luck.
