Convert the mp3 to aiff.

SSH into your iPhone and go to: /system/library/audio/uisounds.

There you will have all the default SMS tones. Here’s the tricky part: you must get rid of one of them. Let me explain: just copy the name of the text tone you don’t want and rename your new audio file that name (so if i have new_tone.aiff and sms-received2.caf rename new_tone.aiff to sms-received2.caf) then it will replace that text tone.So if you wanted to replace the chime text tone you would rename your new_tone.aiff to sms-received2.caf and so on for what ever you wanted to change.
That seems awfully complicated! How do i SSH and convert mp3 to aiff?
It's easy. All you do is convert your mp3 into aiff format (use itunes) and then copy that file to your iphone (
Remember not to have your tone too long...I've done what babbabooey is advising (and it isnt that complicated) but then realised that the tone continued to play even after i had read the SMS. I think it's something like 7 seconds or some small figure like that...unless anyway knows how to stop the tone?
Right i've just done this but it still plays the old tone?! lol
Then you can't have overwritten the right one!

sms-received1.caf -> Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf -> Chime
sms-received3.caf -> Glass
sms-received4.caf -> Horn
sms-received5.caf -> Bell
sms-received6.caf -> Electronic
