That's a bit of a sweeping statement.

A colourless, odourless liquid, gamma-butyrolactone, known as GBL, is a smiliar chemical to a notorious, and banned, date rape drug.

Within the human body GBL is rapidly converted into the better-known gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and its effects are identical.

Extremely potent, just 1ml of the chemical can be enough to cause intoxication, which creates a euphoric feeling as well as a loss of inhibitions.

Last year the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) warned that there was evidence that GBL was being used as a "club drug", particularly among gay men.

But the drug is also used in large quantities in the chemical industry.

The ACMD estimates that around 1,000 tons of GBL are imported into Britain every year to make everything from plastics to nail varnish remover, paint stripper and rubber.

Legally a 250ml bottle of industrial GBL can be bought for around £20.

The drug, thought to be addictive, is also easily available to buy over the internet from overseas sites designed to attract clubbers.

America has alreday banned the sale of GBL designed for human consumption.

Last year Cosmopolitan magazine launched a campaign to have GBL banned in Britain.

Sounds lovely . . . .

She looks like an even-worse version of Lady Gaga. Does this mean that a failed attempt at daterape can be ruled out?

GBL isn't a "date rape" drug. Why do journalists constantly write this in articles about GBH and GBL...? both cause a violent and often fatal reaction to alcohol, as highlighted by this story.

Do we have our drugs policy dictated solely by the mothers of beautiful people....? I'm quite sure alcohol has caused the death of some pretty people. Perhaps we should ban that...?

It would be much better to educate people who are likely to take GBH and GBL as its very risky. By banning none of this will happen and people will still die from ignorance.

pure GBL can be purchased right now.
If a ban was implemented the select few who chose to misuse this nasty substance would resort to the much more dangerous task of extracting the GBL from cleaning products etc......

Not sure what looks have to do with a girl young girl dying by talking a legal drug... a drug she probably thought was 'safe'.
