Apple TV

I went into the local Apple Store today as I wanted to find out some info on the new Apple TV - I'd quite like to get one rather then connect my PC to my TV via a cable.

Basically I wanted to know:
If I wanted to stream content from my Hard Drive to a Apple TV unit, would that run over the internet connection or would it just use the wireless router?

They didn't really sound like they knew fully about it as they've not even got the new one in the store yet. They said it would use my internet connection which I can't seem to comprehend as I wanted to send content from my PC's Hard drive to the unit via the router. I'd like to get to the bottom of this really as if it is using a internet connection then its not feesable for me as our internet is slow and has a 10GB cap that I always reach. I know it needs a internet connection if you want to rent films/ listen to radio/watch you tube etc but it's confused me.

It would use your router to 'route' the media to your tv, but it wouldn't use any of your internet allowance

No it doesn't use your Internet. It streams from the pc to the apple tv.

I've had one for years, love it. Get XBMC on it once you get it.

I agree xbmc is awesome, but isn't Apple tv like 160 pounds, you could get a revo for that and dual boot with win 7. Media streamer and pc all rolled into one

See I thought that too! Right well I don't know whether to be relieved by your replies or pi**ed off at the Apple Store Staff. So basically you just connect it to your router's network and it will only use your internet allowance if you access rentals or youtube. Well that would save the need of connecting to an offline network I guess.

The new Apple TV is £99 but its stupid how they are charging $99 in the USA which is only about £60!

So what is xbmc exactly and how does it work with Apple TV?
