Are Large TV screens a rip-off?

I have alway thought this as people say that if you have a larger TV you should sit further back than you would from a small one. Surely this means that the small will take up the same amount of vision sitting close to it as a big screen would sitting further away?

Can see your point..... heard it said many times.

However, I have a 50" plasma and only sit about 5 feet from it. Looks STUNNING in HD! :)

I think TV's are a big rip of anyway,

CRT is the best,

Plasma and LCD even in HD are pants compared to CRT,

Big is not always better ( Ask the wife...!!! ).

Not be long before HD is replaced by something which is supposed to be better.

HD is great but Plasma and LCD have a few years before they reach the quality of good old fashioned CRT.

^^HD got another >5/10 years shelf life.

True but I've got an old Hitachi CRT that must be 20 years old that works ok, No dead pixels although admittedly the colour is now fading a little..!!!

I believe the current CRT's are time bombed and only designed to last a couple of years, Most of them use LG tubes which are pants.

Have you visited the opticians recently? Maybe you should! :p

I'd agree with you that a good CRT monitor is nicer than an LCD monitor (I still use my 17" Sony Multiscan 17seII), but for large TV sets CRTs are pants in comparisson to a good Plasma and cant even display DVDs at their full potential, let alone HD content!

Got a semi-big TV.

Never felt any happier watching stuff or playing stuff on a million" screen than a 14" 4:3 CRT from 10+ years ago or the screen on my laptop. Novelty wears off.

But hey, the same could be said about most material things right?!

my £2700 36" crt widescreen still blows any lcd/plasma out there, fact :)
#11
try playing assassins creed on a 15 inch tv and then playing on a 32 inch HD ready tv. you can see the difference.

It probably does. My Plasma is too dignified to perform such an act! :whistling:

I guess you didn't see the HD CRT TV's released by Philips a year or two ago then. :whistling:

Nope - but then they are not referring to HD CRTs! Got any links? Didnt even know they existed!

im talking size aswell. On a 15 inch you cant see jackk all but when you have a massive screen its so much easier to see things. also great as gives u an advantage on xbox live :P

A large TV and surround sound is what separates the men from the boys on xbox live :prop:

But I did find it a bit of a led down going from a 28" SD to 50" HD with my 360, I could see the pixely graphics a lot more obviously..

no but still better for freeveiw etc as normal tv channels on a plasma/lcd look so bad, also i love the true blacks and contrast that a crt gives no lcd/plasma can match crt yet, i waiting for sed tv's that are suppose to be as good as crt but in HD and thin also, i guess i just been spoilt with my crt ;)

so for HD, your TV couldnt come close to a plasma/lcd so cant see how you think yours cant be bettered. My plasma looks superb on SD too. have you just been looking at the ones in currys :p

I have no idea what set you have (you've not said as far as I can see), but I am surprised at the contrast comment. Current Panny Plasmas give 20,000:1, yet the CRT example that was posted was only 5000:1

The "blacks" on these plasmas is something that is particularly impressive.

well im waiting for sed tv's they have contrast that will go into the millions, and crt is measured also in the millions so i dont know where you got this 5000 from, even latest lcd screens with 50000:1 dont come close to crt contrast, even the £25,000 lcd cant match crt contrast they wont ever, sed will.

The quote came from the link provided in post 20. So what CRT model is it that you have?
#29
Panasonic TX36PF10 8 years old £2700 was alot of money then also, even the lcd/plasma makers strive to get the contrast of a crt on there screens and lag free timings, they pushed the thin screens mainly for cost's not just because they thought there better.

lmao you need to stop living in the past, what you say might have been true 5 years ago but sorry my £2000 Pioneer blows away your CRT tv (which doesnt even do HD man i wouldnt want to play xbox on that lol), scart connections look amazing, probably even RF, maybe you should venture out into the great beyond like currys and you will see technology has come along way now,,,,they even do movies in high def  seriously this stuff will blow your mind

but i suppose it;s cheaper to sit there and watch Standard Definition Eastenders and tell yourself that "HDTV" is just a fad that will "blow over" that's it you sit there and play it cool

ignorance is bliss i guess (and cheaper in this case!)

well my av system is £16,000 without a screen, i know what's out there man, im waiting for sed do a google, until i see a hd screen that comes close to freeview on a crt then its a no even alot of the hd stuff is not much better than a good std broadcast and as far as HD is concerned i been playing that last 8 years on my pc, but i have been spoilt i guess :) oh and i know HD aint a fad but im just waiting for a screen to do it justice, but im just piccy, remember most of the stuff people here in uk watch is std tv.

look guys hd is ok for next gen consoles i agree and some hd material, but its fact that if we had crt quality on a hd screen it would be great, but until sed screens is mass produced i will stick with my crt as i mainly watch std material.
