Are Matalan in Trouble?

I went into Matalan today and they have no heating on, it's as cold in there as outside! They were also quite busy but only had one guy managing the tills and customer services. He looked well fed up with his electric heater behind him. He said they were not allowed the main heating system on. Has anyone else noticed this in their local store?

they cannot make you work in temp below 16c

they cannot say put an extra coat on as temperature around them has to be at 16c

especially if you work in retail as tills are usually by the door - especially tescos (dislike them anyway)

if you do work in these conditions - your choice - they should give you extra breaks and supply you with a hot drink if requested

you cannot - by statute law - quote if you must - be forced into working in these conditions - (unless you work in freezer dept)

re factories act

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/RevisedStatutes/Acts/ukpga/1961/cukpga_19610034_en_2

(1)Effective provision shall be made for securing and maintaining a reasonable temperature in each workroom, but no method shall be employed which results in the escape into the air of any workroom of any fume of such a character and to such extent as to be likely to be injurious or offensive to persons employed therein.
(2)In every workroom in which a substantial proportion of the work is done sitting and does not involve serious physical effort a temperature of less than [F216 degrees Celsius] shall not be deemed, after the first hour, to be a reasonable temperature while work is going on, and at least one thermometer shall be provided and maintained in a suitable position in every such workroom.

Well now - that link is about Tesco in Inverness.

Yesterday (Wednesday), I was in the big Tesco Extra at Bursledon, Southampton, and guess what? They had no heating on either, and the staff were all wearing fleeces to keep warm!

The checkout lady told me the heating "had broken down".

Also, for the past few days their electric "travelator" (moving pavement between floors) has been out of action, which must be saving them a fair few pounds in electricity.

Soooooooo - conspiracy theorists, over to you! Is Tesco going bust and doing their best to save costs?

I think the joke is on us! They are all trimming the fat and saving money where they can whilst fueling bankruptcy rumours... let's face it nothing attracts the punters like a good closing down sale.
