I thought I would treat myself to a new bike but I'm unsure which one to get.

Is it worth paying £100 extra for the rockhopper comp disc or should I just go for the rockhopper disc?

what's the difference?

lol, do u reckon that's why no-ones replying.....they're all shocked by the price?

Maybe it was a bad idea to post for adivce on bikes costing over £100 on a deals site
I did save up for it though, it's not like I have a spare £600 lying around!

Hmmm the comps fork is better, and the juicy's are nice disc brakes (the tektro's on the standard rocky are pretty naff) but the rest of the spec is pretty much the same.. the frame on both bikes is identical.. to be honest you cant go wrong with either spec, if you arent going to be upgrading for a while id go with the comp, but if you plan to swap and change parts id get the standard rocky as like i say its exactly the same frame, just with a heavier, slower acting fork.. and rockhoppers are great bikes, had one myself a few years ago..

I'm trying to buy a second hand Kona with nobs on for £110... so yes - probably the wrong place to be asking!

I know nothing about bikes, but it looks nice, and if you are paying £900 for a bike... what difference does £100 more make if it'll make you feel better?

I bought a bike off my mate for £250, he had only just put £250 forks on it but he needed some money to pay towards his £3,000 Rocky Mountain full suspension bike.

Depends..with a kona £100 normally gets you a lighter frame.. :-D

Im not planning on upgrading and I am leaning towards the comp, but are the forks and breaks justifiably worth £100 more?

£100 is still £100 at the end of the day, just because you've got a lot of cash doesn't mean you should be wasteful about it.
If anything you should be more worried about spending £100 extra on a bike then £5 extra on a game...just a bit of money sense drummed into my head by my parents lol.

It all makes towards a lighter more responsive bike, and yes the brakes and fork, and lighter wheelset and better rear mech are worth the cash if this is going to be your only bike for a few years and you will keep it stock.. but if its going to be a stretch then id go for the cheaper one as there wont be a huge differance between the two when riding.. though im not a fan of the dart forks personally as i hammer my bikes and the cheap rockshocks flex too much for me..

I'm not saying you should spend more because you have a lot of cash, I'm just saying if I was spending a grand on a bike, I'd wanna be happy with it, rather than perhaps wishing I'd paid the extra £100 at a later date?

No worries.. besides £600 is the point where you start getting a proper hardtail, my stumpy m2 cost silly money, worth every penny though :-D

lol true...but then that is why i posted this thread. to see if i could justify allowing myself to spend that extra £100. No point spending it if the extra parts only add up to twenty quid.

Looks like im getting the comp now anyway so im happy :-D

Stumpjumper M2, its the older style of stumpy made of a metal matrix, very light and bombproof, ive had it for years and the only original part left is the frame, not ridden a bike anywhere near as responsive as it at any point since, including the kula i used to have before it broke in half.. and yeah santa cruz bikes are nice, very expensive though..

looks nice! i havent been on a bike properly for around 3 years, i just hope im not too rusty when i get back on. gonna get the bike next week and take it out on the weekend. how did u manage to break a bike in half? worst iv seen is my mate crack his shin, then he had to walk home on it afterwards.

Riding down the clent hills, didnt see an erosion barrier (dont ask me how) tried to jump it too late and caught the front wheel, it snapped the headtube off.. sent me flying! :whistling:

Good choice - they're both great bikes.
In terms of choosing between them, I think it depends how you're planning to use it.
If you ride the thing seriously, take it to trail centres etc and actually explore the limits of the bike, then you'd probably appreciate the slightly better spec on the Comp. If not, it's probably not worth the extra £100 to you.

I can vouch for the Juicy 3's on the Comp though - I've got them on my Giant Trance & they're cracking.

Whichever you go for... enjoy!

haha, unlucky. I was riding to ashton court (place in bristol) everything went fine but on the way back home i was pelting it down a main road on a hill and it had just been raining. the front wheel slipped on these leaves and slid out from under me... I end up flying through the air down the hill, belly flopped onto the road and slid for a couple more metres. for some reason i was unhurt, not even a scratch! but my front break was cracked and no longer worked.

I'm hoping to get back into biking properly, at least go mental for a few hours at least once or twice a week. but to be honest I don't know how far im going to go. I just have to get out there and see.

Plus the black frame on the comp looks nicer :-D
