Are you a patriot?

Do you, like myself fly the union flag proudly from your house/apartment?

Would you, like me be willing to die to protect our great nation?

No trolling please and keep posts on topic and avoid any name calling

Sorry, nothing to be proud of anymore.
Our identity has been trashed by this appalling government, and being British means nothing.

It's kinda like bragging about how much your dad earns when you're at school.

I'm proud of some of the things this country has done, not of the others.

But I think patriotism is a strange thing to cling to.

It's a Union Flag, it's only a union jack when flown at sea. Very proud to be British served 1997 - 2005 leave my current job in March, debating returning to the Armed Forces.
I fly a Union Flag in my back garden, the nipper has a jolly roger attached to her play house.

I could quote Wilde or Johnson, but I find it a strange thing to be proud of.

I'm proud of my own achievements, but the historical achievements of the place I was born....

why?

I agree that it's up there with religion in convincing people to 'fight and die for a cause'.

Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to the individual.

I didn't say you weren't. I was just trying to find the root of your opinion. Every opinion has one - they aren't created in a vacuum.

Most people are able to say 'this is what I think, and this is why'.

I apologise.

so true so true, this thread could open a can of worms like british people who are not proud to be british and hate britain but live here loving all britain has to offer, not having a go at any individual group of people just peed off at folk who dont know when they have got it good :(

I would love to be "British" however it seems that the meanings of some elements of being British are being eroded away by the PC madness and lunacy rule from Brussels.

no need for an apology, you said nothing wrong. I am not great with words to explain how I feel so will leave that to the intellectuals on here....

did he ever tell you this one?
"Twch din pob saes"

Nah, just know it's the motto of the Welsh Guards it stuck with me for some reason. I only remember that one and the motto of the Coldstream Guards "nulli secundus" (second to none).

Scottish first,British second, and very proud of it. However Im not one of these anti-english Scottish nutters-the only time I would want england to lose at football is when we play them. Will be supporting them all the way in the world cup. Likewise in european club comps support every english team(unless they are playing a scottish one)

I know I may be in the tiny minority but in europe I would support celtic AND rangers, and any other club involved-I have simply never understood those who would support ANYONE who is playing england at sport.

I should add would also support wales/Ireland in the same situation. You can be proud of Scotland without hating england-just my opinion tho.

Fair enough.

Personally, I travel a fair amount and you begin to realise nationality is a minor thing. You'll find similar people around the world.

It's no surprise that in America, the most patriotic people are largely those who are least-travelled and knowledgeable about the world.

I would assert that it's a similar situation in the UK.

Nice point about sport.

I also think the comparison between rugby and football is interesting. There are different types of 'patriotism' exhibited in both sports, one uglier than the others.

I think that's indicative of the intelligence of each set of fans, but it also highlights how 'patriotism' isn't the same thing for every person.

we if had any culture then yes, so no.

todays culture = Big brother and binge drinking.
#36
I just see being British is an accident of birth. So i can't see it as something to be proud of in my opinion.

that is actually a VERY good point-I have debenture seats at murrayfield, and have gone to the rugby since I was a child, back in the days when stadia were not all seated-there was never a problem with segregation-my dad,my brothers and I could stand side by side with opposing supporters, have a bit of banter and shake hands at the end whatever the result. Football is getting much better in that regard nowadays tho,and hopefully the day will come when the tiny minority of lunatics are completely weeded out.
