Obsessed, I'd call it.

Hardly a day goes by when we aren't reminded of the MILLIONS that someone is worth. I could list, probably hundreds of people worth more than 1 million.

Life seems to be all about making LOADS of money, spending LOADS of money, saving LOADS of money.

What about how we are being nurtured into parting with all of this MONEY.

Despite having perfectly aceptable TV's Washing Machines Etc we are encouraged to buy newer, later and prettier models.

How many of you purchased wide-screen TVs despite having a perfectly OK 4x3. Come on - own up.

How many of us CANT claim that they have bought a 'Bargain' that they didn't really need but did so 'cos it was a 'bargain' and they couldn't resist.

Apparantly, 60% of women would leave their partners if it wasn't for the financial situation that they would then have to face. Are you one of them - Or Is Your Wife!!

What sort of lagacy are we leaving for the Grand-Children.

Forget global warming, THIS is where the bigger threat lies in the more immediate future.

I'm sure that I am not the only person on here that feels this way. What are YOUR views?

i understand where the OP is coming from. I was thinking about this the othre day ... well, something similar. What is happiness ? Its definitely not money so why is our main purpose in life to make as much money as possible.

Everyone needs to stop a second and think of their loved ones, and other things that make them happier in life. Its so sad to hear old folks living on their own without any family to see because their family is too busy or far away to come see them. Of course, if there was money in the equation they would go running.

Life just seems so much more than it is right now ...

and no, I didnt jus find God ...

The difference between what I describe and the Conspicuous Consumption theory is that I see us ALL going the way of the Conspicuous consumer, subconciously. We are being co-erced into it without us knowing.

What I am suggesting is that we need to be aware of it before it takes over our lives. I am not suggesting mass asceticism - just watching our lifestyles and those around (close to) us.

Edit: And I STILL haven't found God.
#12
I see where your coming from, but if everyone spent dramatically less than they did now, wouldnt most of us be with out jobs? no consumption = No job = no money = no food

God found me (jokeing)

That was freaky!

anyway - to the op - welcome to world of capitalism. Dont worry, it'll all end in tears in a big way within the next 30 years once oil runs out, prolonged of course by more wars in the middle east provoked by the biggest instigator of global warfare, namely the good old US of A (Iran is imminent).

see :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

Off topic but I still cant find wii play anywhere ;)

I agree with VTB...RIZAL01 why sign up for a deals forum where the main idea is to find a barging and therefore spending your money if you are so against this ideology

Now that's a strange perspective.
I thought the idea of this forum was spending LESS money, That's why.
Like all of us, I still NEED things, you know.
Unless you feel that by spending LESS I become richer therefore, I become what I am against?

Perhaps you are right.:)

Or, perhaps, I too am a victim and can speak from that perspective too. You will have to decide, won't you?

i want nice things, because i do....

"Apparantly, 60% of women would leave their partners if it wasn't for the financial situation that they would then have to face. Are you one of them - Or Is Your Wife!!"

i would leave my other half if i had to bu ti love him so no prob there

"Despite having perfectly aceptable TV's Washing Machines Etc we are encouraged to buy newer, later and prettier models."

i do tend to wait untill things break then buy new shiny ones

"What sort of lagacy are we leaving for the Grand-Children"

i dunno but when im gone they can have my houseand all my new shiny things

"Life seems to be all about making LOADS of money, spending LOADS of money, saving LOADS of money"

yep thats why i work, i save for holidays spend all the money ive saved, i want to live my life not die with lots of money in the bank, i want to spend it on nice things i can enjoy with my family as they say you only live once

"How many of us CANT claim that they have bought a 'Bargain' that they didn't really need but did so 'cos it was a 'bargain' and they couldn't resist."

i have to say i buy things all the time i don't need, like a doll set i bought the other day for 3yr olds my little one is only 18months, but i will save it till she can use it (one less crimbo prezzy), and that cd i bought dont even know who the hell the person is but for 70p how can you not lol found out my cousin like it so she can have it

live life be happy buy whatever the hell you want, its your life live it however the hell you want

We are all nuts!!! A shroud has no pockets

Well I personally go between saving and buying.

I like to have a good amount of savings and what I have over that I will spend,

I like having a widescreen tv as thats nicer than a regular size, and going by your example we should be happy with 10 inch televisions in black and white.

Watching a movie on a smart tv with good speakers relaxes me as it gets away from the stress of life.

Saying that though I buy cheap dvds food etc.

Interesting thread.

Well I personally either buy or save, rather than post money into random letterboxes.

I like to spend a good amount of money and what I have left over I will save, some would say I am an economical disaster.

I like having a regular size TV, I'm not the "size matters" type - thankfully neither is my wife. Personally, I think we could all be happy with 10" televisions in black and white.

Watching a movie on a stupid TV with hissing sound relaxes me, the eye strain releases me from the stress of life.

Saying that though, I steal dvds, food, etc.

Meh I agree with the OP - TOTALLY and I understood what conspicious consumption meant since I was 13, I just never knew there was a word for it.

Its true, people shouldn't reguard money so highly but the feeling it generates when you have it, a sense of "self worth" seems to be the main reason why people lavish & love money. Instead, try and look at the bigger picture and when I say that really actually think...

Precisely!!

Try this for size. You're 28 years old and your MUM dies and two years later your DAD dies. Later in life your marriage of 20+ years breaks down and you become depressed - on medication for 12Mths. You lose a well paid job. Later still your older BROTHER takes his life. Then your youngest DAUGHTER, the light of your life gets pregnant and then, during pregnancy, discovers that she has CANCER!!

This could happen to ANYONE!! (And yes, it did - to me)

And money/possesions are important?

Don't make me laugh.
#30
is that a lie? you say your 28 and your marriage of 20+ years breaks down
u was married at 8?

Read it properly, because as we have no reason to believe it isn't true, trying to undermine the poor guy on an internet forum could topple him over the edge. It does say "later in life".

indeed my bad!!! but if thats true that sure is some unlucky life

I agree, I want to give him a big hug. Although I would be slightly superstitious of the bad luck rubbing off - but I wouldn't show it and that's the main thing. To all those wondering, Rizla has been added to my HUKD buddy list.
