ARGH!! help with packing on a nile cruise!!

i'm having serious difficulty with packing and wondered if any of you had any tips. i have to pack 3 sets of clothes per day - clothes for the morning, it's a muslim country so you have to cover up to a certain extent on excursions - clothes for the afternoon on deck lounging by the pool - evening outfits as you have to dress up a bit for dinner.
i have a 20kg luggage allowance and nearly finished packing and my suitcase (still got to add hair straighteners and makeup) my case weighs 19kg already. i've weighed it on two different sets of bathroom scales and each is weighing differently. i'm a bit worried as this would mean i couldn't bring anything home as it would take me over my limit :(
any tips would be greatly appreciated!

lol i know, i can't help it!! i've just shoved some shoes in my hand luggage and that's lightened it up ever so slightly!
i don't think i can wash anything there. i wouldn't be able to dry anything as the windows in your cabin don't open so there's be no fresh air :( bah!!

so you are taking 3 sets of clothes for every day(2 weeks?) and expecting not to be able to have any laundry done or able to do any in a hot dry country?

who advised you?

A good tip is to wear ten layers of clothes and pants before you enter the ship and pack as usual...Viola! All the clothes you'll need and you won't go over the limit... Reps appreciated.

i'm going for 1 week. i really want avoid any extra charges including laundry!
who advised me what?
i really don't think i would be a great idea to walk around luxor or aswan in clothes you would wear by a pool, you have to have a bit of respectful for different cultures

fair enough

if you dont want to pay a few pence for clean clothes.........

the clothes you are taking must be extremely heavy 20kg for 1 week in a scorching country:?

i am going away for 5 nights and only got 10kg so think yourself lucky
#15
How about getting some of them vacuum bags? Does that only affect the size of the clothes or would that reduce the weight?

my suitcase is really heavy when it's empty. i think that's half the problem. the clothes i've packed are quite light. it's all the suncreams, after sun etc that's weighing it down.

Hair Straighteners? How long you going for 6 months?

you can get them lightweight ones, also do you need full size products of liquid if you only doing a week?

surely for on baord during the day all you need is a bikini and a t shirt, also will you be doing excursions everyday? 3 outfits a day is not needed and if so then wash and wear

read it again I didnt say you were stupid, I said taking 3 sets is stupid.

Buy all the consumables when you get there if you need to gain a bit of weight, then throw what's left. No point taking suncare products, washing stuff.

i have read it. having been to egypt before i know suncare products are very expensive when you are there so i am taking them with me. it WOULD be stupid to not take any to a country that is in the mid to high 40's temperature wise. if you had read what i have said you'd also know my case is heavy when empty also.

what size products are you taking........200ml/g of sun protections and 200 ml/g of after sun.......thats not even half a kilo

surely that would be in your hand luggage so you can use it when you get there?

when i have been abroad they have always weighed my hand luggage along with my case so i assumed the weight allowance was for both :?

you do not need that amount of suncream, jeeze do you intend on using it as a mixer with drinks, shampoos and conditioners you do not need full size either for a week, if you must take full size at least share the weight with mum, then you can share the products there

Never had my hand luggage weighed - normally its just checked by size and sometimes have had to place it into a holder to make sure the size is acceptable for taking onboard

I definitely think u should consider that - good reviews as well and saving u a good bit of weight before you even leave!!

Covering up in a "Muslim" Country is the biggest myth ever, seriously.

I've lived in Egypt, and I am half Egyptian, and unless your topless or your showing your whole cleavage off (which would even get remarks here even), then your good to go.

Been on a Nile cruise several years back. The general rule then was anything goes during day and on excursions. Didn't need to cover up at places like Abu Simbel or Luxor. All tourists, anyway.

We were on a 5star ship (nowhere near it) and at evening meals, passengers were "expected to dress smart" but we were backpacking and just wore a shirt and long shorts. We did, however have to eat before the other passengers arrived as we had only paid £10 (to the captain) for 3 nights.

My advice would be only take one swimsuit as you will only use it on ship pool, a few t-shirts and shorts and one or two outfits for evenings.

And forget the hair straighteners. It is well over 100 degrees in Luxor and Aswan at this time of year. Wear a hat for protection and just tie your hair back. Just remember to be generous with "baksheesh" and you will save money and get better service. Have a great time. Enjoy

I am always over.. This is what I did a few wks back..

Get a lightweight holdall with wheels still..this weighs a lot less.

Bought loads of small plastic bottles to decant my toiletries in or take sachets of things.

3 pairs of shoes max.. I'm a shoeholic and I took loads and only wore the same 3 all holiday.

Take a few pashmina equiv or kaftans obviously cooler so u can cover yourself when needed.

Pack as much stuff as you can in your hand luggage Inc straightness.. I always do in case they get lost..

If all else fails of ur going with someone else put some in their luggage lol

have you seen the luxor forum on trip advisor? there was a thread on there a few weeks back and some of the regular travellers got quite angry about how some people were dressing whilst there. that's why i'd rather be on the safe side

Sorry but who cares about what "regular travellers" think. As wotwot said the Eqyptians are generally a very friendly people who aren't really bothered unless you are walking about half naked. Just be polite, learn a few phrases and tip them and you will be fine.

PS. I travelled all across Eqypt and never encountered in issues about our dress code. Just be sensible
