I just ordered something costing £200 on line from Argos and got an email reply that in part stated:

This transaction was placed on Saturday 3rd January 2009, authorisation number 03*****. It has been charged to your card but if we cannot accept your order for any reason, we will provide a full refund to your card if we have debited your account in advance.

Can they actually do this? I'm furious that they should take my money and only then at some point in the future decide whether to accept my order. Further I risk missing out on sale items that could have replaced this order if they do decide to reject it in a week or so.

Any one have any views or knowledge of this situation?

I think quite a few companies (I'm sure I heard Debenhams mentioned before) do this. Not sure if it's illegal but certainly annoying if they do reject the order. It's probably to cover their backs should they have stock issues etc.

So wrong....when my Dell PC was delayed, they didn't take the money until it had been dispatched. Hopefully it's just "small print" and it will be delivered ok.
If you can find it elsewhere in the meantime, cancel the order and buy there.

mainly big companies who do it

just had a ding dong with bt - you cancel line + they cut off straight away but dont refund until next 3 monthly bill due (as you pay in advance)

waiting for reply from ofcom!!

Have they actually taken it, or put a hold on the money?

I ordered a bed from Argos once, they took the money then told me it was out of stock, then six weeks later it still did not materialise so cancelled the order and had to wait two further weeks for my money back. Always order over the phone now to make sure it's in stock first

I did an on line stock check before ordering.

As it happens they have called me this morning and arranged a delivery for the 7th.

Still that doesn't change the principal, that they can take the money and then maybe honour the order or maybe not.

Anyhow worked out for me in the end.

terms and conditions

all companies have them but many people fail to read them and then complain with no real reason to do so

im sure you dont sign your name to anything without reading it so why do people enter their bank details without reading?

I don't agree that this is a complaint without reason. I don't expect a large company like Argos to take my money and then consider whether or not they want to honour the order. In my opinion this is wrong and whether I read this in the terms and conditions before or after ordering, it's still wrong.

You would not expect a reputable company to rip you off though or practise what is in essence a real dodgy suspicious act not like people are dealing with Trotters Independent Trading Co. oh hang on that's exactly what the Argos business model is.

i agree to a certain point i used to buy quite a bit from argos but then they deceided to tell me i couldnt order any more and had to use their business services site, i dont even order that much to warrant that

any subsequent orders i put through on my card and address were accepted then refunded like 2/3 days later

you are at the mercy of these retailers online and basically they can do what they want and make up the rules as they go along

best thing to do is just goto the high street which is what i have to do now

i was just plain lazy to do so before

You think this is deceitfull?
They are mere beginners at deceit compared with Abbey National, who ran a competition to win cars etc by entering a slogan in 15 words or less.
They then gave the cars and other good prizes to people who had entered slogans of up to "21" Words!!!!!!!!
Argos only "appears" to be dishonest while Abbey National proves beyond any doubt that they ARE dishonest!

And they wonder why all the money got p***ed away... if they can't even count to 21 were all doomed, maybe we should just send them all blank cheques now, save Gordon from giving all our hard earned to them.... Muppets
