Yesterday went to Staples to buy some.. er.. staples. They had "clearance" section with couple of MP3 players on it. I think they had Archos 700 (40Gb) for 199, Sony AP1L for 99 quid and Cowon iAudio 30Gb for 99 quid as well.
I don't like Sony, Archos is too big, so I bought X5 as it is being praised on just about every computer forum as being "the BMW of MP3 players".

Well.. I was wrong. I think I am computer literate but I can't get bl**dy thing to work. The problem is that I can't copy any files to it! According to Cowon, this thing should be seen as hard drive. Which is how my PCs see it.
But just about every file I copy to it is corrupted.

I tried to format X5, upgraded firmware, changed copying mode (basically, using command copy /v and xcopy /S /V) - nada! I even changed Windows disk access strategy - still doesn't work.

I've given up. This thing tomorrow goes back to whatever hell it came from. I don't need such BMW. I can live with Ford. :)

And I thought I got a bargain... :(

Perhaps a firmware update if you do not have the latest atm?

Pain in the neck Staples aren't online, although the AV700 is a generally useless idea I would pick one up at 200 quid.

Hmm..maybe it's good they're not online then!

I tried to format X5, upgraded firmware...

It is running 2.10 now. I decided against 2.11b1 as I might need to use DRM-protected files.

Try to visit your local Staples - maybe they still have some left.

We don't have Staples stores in Scotland :(

Visited Staples today - they apologized and replaced X5. They gave me one ex-display (10% off) and it seems to work OK. Oh, and with new firmware it shows Russian :) Great for me!

Bought Sony AP1L as well, just to compare two of these players and make my mind which one is right for me.
Sony is superbly built, got all accessories I might need (apart from protective case). Sony's menu and controls are simply excellent, no comparison to Cowon. So I was quite sure that Sony stays and Cowon goes.
But then I tried to download songs into Sony... What a mess! The only way to get it in there is to use Sonic Stage software. And the only way to connect player is to format it first. Fantastic idea...
Anyway, formatted it, got a couple of songs (roughly a thousand) and tried to move it across. First of all, Sonic doesn't understand some Cyrillic names and crashes when it sees it. Some of files were rejected for some reason. Some were converted to ATRAC. And it is impossible to get files out of player once it was copied. Great idea... not for me.

So, conclusion is : Cowon - suspicious hardware quality, excellent software. Sony - brillian hardware, rubbish software. The verdict: Sony goes, Cowon stays. :)

Download a program called Jet Audio, or was it Jet Shell, and upgrade the firmware, that should do the trick, i own a iAudio M3 20gb, a very very good player, much better than the iPod...maybe, never used them.

The firmware is upgraded (that was the very first thing I did with the new X5). It is 2.10-e now. Not sure whether I want to install Rockbox though.
As to JetAudio, I downloaded it, just had no time to install.

BTW, have you got remote control for your M3? Is it any good? I read on some forums that remote is rubbish and not worth even 1p.

Remote is good, took me awhile to get use to, but very good.
I have to admit the ONLY thing i dont like about my 'BMW' M3 lol is the remote, the screen sometimes refuses to display anything at all at times.

Maybe thats where your problem lies, transfer music using JetAudio only, not the usual drag and drop technique from My Computer.

Do you know by any chance - will screen on remote display non-Latin characters? Is there language selection for remote or is it just following selection on unit itself?

Is this an advice or you simply describing your experience? :)
I copied 20GB of music using the following command:
xcopy /v /s *.* :\Music\*.*
No errors were reported back.

Dont know about the languages mate, and that was just a suggestion, i've never used anything else but JetShell Pro to transfer music so i wouldn't really know if the other technique is dodgy or not.

Thanks mate.
I just transferred a couple of videos to X5, picture looks jerky but still watchable. Probably should be OK on a plane or something.
I also managed to crash X5 while trying to operate radio, so it needed reset. Took me some time to find suitable needle, lol.

No wonder it was a bargain, the previous owner forgot to give the BMW a service/MOT check regularly.
#15
can you buy the iaudio online at staples
#16
i have a iaudio x5L it has superb sound quality and the radio is very clear unlike other mp3 players very fuzzy, and the 35 hour battery life makes life so much easier unlike the ipods.
